New Tire Wire Bead Kinked - OK?
Hi, I recently received a Schwalbe Marathon Plus I ordered online. It was shipped in a plastic bag rather than a box, and it must have been knocked around or had things stacked on it because the wire head was crimped and linked in several places, as pictured.
I smoothed these out by hand as best as I could. The tire mounted fine (besides being super tight like these always seem to be), seems to hold air, and rolls smooth without any weird bumps or bulges.
Do you think this tire will be safe to ride? I'll be going on tour soon, and I don't want any nasty surprises.
Thanks!
James

I don't know********** I had a tire that had a kinked bead, and it would not stay on the rim. Dealer replaced it!

Wouldn't blip my radar. If you were TRYING to break that wire tire bead what would you do? Flex it back and forth a whole bunch of times - right? Once the tire is installed on the rim the wire bead will be pulled into the correct arc and won't be able to flex.

Add me to the list saying, par for the course. If you didn't know from having mounted it yourself, you'd never know or have a reason to care.
Have a great trip.

Wire bead tires are not truly 'foldable' but you can't realistically ship them unless they are. I just received two that were similar to yours, which is typical. I just straightened them by hand to get rid of the sharp bend. Your tires will most likely be fine.

Best way to 'fold' or compact a wire bead tire in Sheldon Brown video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-5UqFxbOvA
If done correctly no kink to the bead will occur but it is not a small a package as if you kink the bead.

I'd say the issue is whether it will mount on your rim. I received a pair of beaded tires in a box once. The box was fine, but one tire had a bad kink. My guess is that it had hung on a rod for a long time in a warehouse. I never could get it to mount and returned the pair.

Straighten out the bend. or return to seller.
bike shop distributors use bigger boxes . an order of 10 tires is handled differently ..

I don't like how kinked tire beads look (before mounting), but never had any problems with them.

I've ordered wire bead/non-folders online and received them flat in a full size box. If I got one folded/compressed, I'd refuse delivery/return it
