Question Italian Postie bikes with dynamo for electric assist?

I was talking to my friend Pasquale the other day about electric assist bikes. I am concerned about reliability. He told me that in Italy they have for many years had electric assist bikes powered by a dynamo- that you don't plug in. I have been unable to find anything on Google. Can anyone here help? If they exist, they would surely be reliable, since they would have been using this technology for 30 years or more. Thanks for any tips. diane

Isn't regenerative braking exactly that? As for not having to plug in... I'm doubtful. Any output or assist you get from the motor would first have to be put in there by you. Due to losses, the effort needed to generate that electricity would far exceed the assist you get back from the system. You might as well install a windmill on the bike, it would work equally well (i.e. not too well at all).
