I haven't posted pics here for so long that I forget how to do so. Two Sundays ago a neighbor was having a yard sale, and my eye caught her early '90s vintage Peugeot mixte. It's in mint condition & I paid $100 for it.It's all original, and despite some dry rot on the the gumwall tires (they hold air), my plan is to replace them and the saddle -- maybe a Brooks (with which I have no experience).

So my requests to my fellow NorCal cyclists are 1). How do I post pictures? and 2.) where can I purchase vintage bike parts?

More details: It has 2 chainrings in front, 5 in back with a dork-disk (soon to be removed), a quill stem where the shifters are. I'd like to put a rack on it that will accommodate both baskets and panniers and use it for my commuter and errand-running bike. Does such a rack exist?

I rode it around the block and it felt weird, flat pedals and saddle too far forward (I was over the handlebars, not slightly behind them), suicide brakes, and it was so heavy! It's steel without lugs and the brightest blue, with the original decals. I love the French flag one that says "Made in France."

One more request: How do I find the year it was made? The East Bay LBS is no longer in business and the Peugeot website was not helpful.

So this N+1 makes an even 10 bikes in our stable. I'm looking forward to riding this new steed.

How to post photos, the Oldstrong Method. Like me, not the fastest, but it gets the job done.
  1. See the icons next to the smiley when you post text.
  2. Select the little framed photo of a tree icon for "Insert Image"
  3. Select the "insert image from URL" option.
  4. Paste in the URL of a PhotoBucket etc. link to the photo you with to post.
  5. Un-check the " Retrieve remote file and reference locally" box.
  6. Click OK
  7. Click "Go Advanced" for a preview of how your image will look in your post.
  8. Click "Submit Reply", if you like what you see.

I look forward to seeing your new blue garage sale steal.
  • A tip to lighten it up, it worked on my 81 Univega conversion.

Get the old 27" steel wheels off of it, it might take long reach brakes to reach modern, slightly smaller, 700C wheels.
Even low end modern aluminum wheels are way lighter & long reach dual pivot brakes are worth it for good stopping power.
Tektro makes a good value long reach brake.

Speaking of my Univega conversion, here is a shot of the aluminum wheels, just Alex Rims DA22 model, cheap.
You can also see the Tektro long reach brakes.

I've found Refried Cycles here in SF has reasonable prices on used parts, and are also friendly and enthusiastic about getting unused, underused or unusable bikes back on the road, but it's a small shop so they have what they have on any given day. San Francisco's Bike Kitchen has all sorts of components and parts for even more reasonable prices, but if that's too far, Sacramento also has a Bike Kitchen and Davis has a Bike Collective. Great place to do your measuring first and installation later, meet people who may well have similar bikes or relevant mechanic experience to talk and swap with, and while the parts on hand are rarely at or near top-of-class, the selection is generally weighted toward components that fit standards from the indexed shifting era (mid-to-late 80s) on.

I still end up on eBay all the time, which is fine for smaller things that are relatively inexpensive to ship and a good way to find dealers with experience or specialties in the relevant makers, models and eras. You can find better prices on Craigslist, however there is a direct correlation between not knowing how much a vintage part is worth and not knowing how to accurately describe said vintage part so you can easily find them through search terms related to the sizing or standard you need. VeloBase, Bike-alog, the C&V forums here, other (more detailed) listings on eBay, Craigslist, Amazon et al. or even Google image search results can help you reverse engineer those details from the photos and brief descriptions you do find. But go ahead and get in touch to ask anyway, because it will help build your network of potential sources for future reference and help tune your Shadar ("shady" + "radar") since there is a pretty big black market out there.

My commuter bike, on the commute through downtown Oakland - I liked the mural, and some guy was working on it when I stopped to take the picture. He seemed excited that someone was stopping to admire his work! The bike is a 2014 Novara Zealo. REI quit making them after only one production year, likely because they weren't selling very well. Tiagra drivetrain, BB7 brakes, Weinmann wheelset, and Novara housebrand cockpit - not going to win any races with it, but reliable equipment for general riding and commuting.

My new new bike

I said "new new" because Lynskey replaced my used bike (model 2015) with a brand new one, model 2016. For more info see: https://www.bikeforums.net/manufactur...xperience.html

One time I had my spare fall off, so now I tie it with a cord, and put the toe strap through the folded tire so it can't wiggle loose from the saddle.

Love those classic and vintage road bikes but haven't seen much activity in this thread lately. Here's a photo dump of pics from the PO of my new-to-me '92 C'dale SR600. I've also got my 2014 Marin Trail Attack XT8 full sus mtb, and the vintage Firenze GL5000 that everyone loves to hate on. I have some other bikes that I'll have to post up when I get a chance to take them out for some pics.
