Servicing Montgomery Ward 3 Speed

Hello,
I recently acquired a Montgomery Ward Shimano 3 speed bike. I know, it's low end but it's a fun around town bike that I wanted to service and gift to a friend.
It was pretty beat and quite rusty so I've been cleaning it up and plan to take it to bare steel and polish it. The hub seems to be working nicely, the cranks however have been a pain.
The non drive crank arm wiggled when ridden so I figured the threading or area that connects to the spindle must be worn or stripped.
Another issue is these are cottered cranks but what is puzzling is there is only a cotter in the non drive crank arm, there is no fastening mechanism on the drive side crank (that I can see). I was able to remove the only cotter pin present with the hammer and woodblock method but I am unsure of how to proceed. I planned on replacing the cranks with another set of old cotter crankset but now I'm not even sure how to remove the drive side. I should also mention that non drive crank arm's pin was installed properly and was not the cause of the play. Any ideas of how to remove the rest?

Can you post a pic of the drive side crank arm?

All attempts to post photos from my library are met with an error message stating that I "can not post URLs." What URLs? These are files!

That sounds like a Thompson/Thun bottom bracket. I've dealt with one once on an old Russian three speed. It's been a bit, but I recall that once you take off the removeable crank arm, the rest comes apart a lot like a typical one piece bottom bracket.
There's a breakdown of it on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bottom_bracket#Thompson

So I was able to knock out the crank and repack. That part is done. Now I'm doing something a little unusual but it should work. The bike previously had a grip shifter but I'm switching over to a generic sturmey archer style thumb shifter. The indicator chain installation is the key difference. So I'll feed it down to the hub and and lock the cable between two bolts (as previously installed). I will update and really wish I could share progress photos since the project has come a long way!

Sound like maybe a 73 vintage. That was during the gas war. Amazingly enough some of the frames from MW in those days were made in Austria, and were actually quite nice. It was just the components that were low grade.

This one was made in Austria, thanks for letting me know the year! That's been a mystery as I haven't been able to reveal the engravings on the rear hub but the front says made in Italy.

Question, what are folks' experience with tire liners?
