Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Also, is it okay to ride it this way until I figure out how to get it off?
You can order a bunch of thin spacers and stack as needed. You can also take the cassette off, see what’s on there, and go up a mm or two. This is an item any LBS will have. I don’t think there’s much danger in riding with a rattling cassette.

Posted it in the bike engineer thread. Didn’t get the confirmation yet that I was hoping for, but two guys thing that it’s a loose free hub. They said that if cassette was loose the cogs would move independently of each other. If it’s a loose free hub than the whole cassette would move as one. I have the latter happening from what I can tell.

I didn’t ride this morning, I hope that it’s simple fix either a loose free hub or missing spacer.

I’m going to have to take the cassette off for either fix, anything wrong with zipping it together with a zip tie and throwing it in a bowl of gasoline to clean it?

Ive always thought or the body like a bicycle wheel. It starts off in fine shape, smooth bearings, true, shiny, etc. and gradually, it starts to wobble or run rough and the mechanic or doc puts it right and it rolls on again until the next time it needs attention. But eventually, spokes break, races fail, rims crack, or whatever and the wheel has run its last revolution.

If whole cassette moves as one, I do agree it's a loose freehub.

It's ok to use gasoline on your cassette but you might want something safer and/or more environmentally friendly, like a citrus degreaser or mineral spirits.

I’d settle for a Cervelo in the garage. Don’t think I’ll have time to ride again until after we move next week.

I sent you a PM, but I think that the problem is that you've got a new-fangled - and somewhat dumb - freehub body like mine on the Zipps. They can be pulled straight off without the use of tools. I'm guessing that, at some point when cleaning or changing a tire, the freehub body pulled out a little and didn't get fully re-seated. Pull the wheel off, wiggle this way, wiggle that way and firmly seat.

So you are not going for the full deal?

Sure, could be a loose free hub. Why not take the cassette off and find out? Easy fix either way.

I'm thinking that he doesn't even have to do that. My end caps just thread on to the axle spindle and, if they've come a little loose, the freehub body can slide along the spindle, as well. Take the wheel off, righty-tighty the end caps and I'll bet he's good.

...but I could be wrong.
