8sp Alivio shifter and 8/9sp Tiagra rear derailleur?
Can someone stop me before I do a dumb thing and waste a night getting these to play nicely together? or just tell me it's going to be OK?
I may be able to get pics and model numbers tonight, but I am away from the partially-assembled bike right now.

I'm not so certain they will. I thought I remembered reading that Shimano's mtb line up doesn't use the same pull ratio on their shifters as they do road. May well be wrong, but if you have them and they aren't shifting correctly, then that's something to consider.

they are both road levels parts , so they should work together .

From what I've seen, Alivio has always been on mtn bikes, while Tiagra has always been on road bikes. I'm not confirming or denying anything here, just saying what I've seen/experienced.
BTW, if you go to Trek's website, and send them a message, they typically get back to you very quickly (if you do it today, you'll likely have an accurate response by the weekend.).

Up to 9 speed Shimano had the same pull ratio (IIRC except for some old Dura-Ace) for all RDs. Your parts should work together.
Starting from 10s things change: old 10s Tiagra has the same pull ratio as the 7/8/9 speed ones. 10s MTB is different, new 10s Tiagra is different.

I had a little trouble last week with it not reeling the cable back in on downshifts, but it occurred to me last last night that that might be a cable routing issue. I'll update after I get some tinkering time tonight.

Yup - cable routing issue. Fixed it and they work like a champ. Oh-- and it was an Altus shifter, not Alivio as mentioned.

I didn't end up weighing it but I bet that Tourney crankset weighed five pounds.
