January thaw - who got out today?

Here in Western Massachusetts, we were dumped on by several snowstorms starting in mid-December. That put me off the bike since then.

Today, the temps will be near 55 F. and most of the snow is gone from the roads. I did my first commute of 2008! Yippeeee!

Anyone else commute by bicycle today for the first time in a long time thanks to this January thaw?

I will be commuting for the first time in 2008, today. I could have done it a few days ago, the weather here has been great, but I've been helping a friend move out, and driving my sick girlfriend to the doctor, pharmacy, etc...

Yay for first ride of the year!

That's right, snow and ice just provides some fun and extra exercise for the brain and body.

I've done well so far this year--riding in all but one day so far. I might be in for a fun ride home tonight, however, as that front that created numerous tornado warnings across Missouri, Indiana, Illinois is headed to Ohio.

Did anyone here ride in that weather yesterday?

First commute of the year for me, though even in the summer between travel and fatigue the most I do is 3 times a week. Commute is almost 40 miles return.

52 leaving Old Town Alexandria at 650 this morning. Supposed to hit 72 this afternoon.

Not my first ride of the year (I did 20 over the weekend in 40 degrees, and saw a bald eagle), but my first commute.

I got out yesterday. I get out every weekday. Although I did ride about 35 miles as opposed to my usual winter bare-bones sub-10-mile bike/bus commute.

Yesterday was my first commute since November, but I am still going out on weekends for 25 - 45 mile rides. Going to try and commute 4 days this week here in CT.

Never stopped, however I'm back wearing the tights/coat that I would wear in early Fall.

There was some heavy rain (i got soaked) and thunder rumbles. It was crazy windy, and I had two frozen pizzas and 3-32 oz. beers in my mess bag, which is a bulky, floppy, unwieldy load for a small gal like me. I was scared I'd get blown off the bike. Wouldn't be the first time.

As soon as I got home about midnight the storm sirens started wailing. I stood on the porch with my neighbor and watched the storm for a few minutes. Other than some cool lightning flashes, I was very underwhelmed.

Now it's all wet out there, and misty. I wanted to ride my new (to me) leather saddle today, but I'll have to take the rain bike instead. Boo.

I've been on the subway a lot more than I'd like for various reasons. Today I'm glad none of those reasons applied. SS jersey + arm warmers, bib shorts + knee warmers... ahhhhhhh!

Unbelieveable, 65F at 6:00AM, shorts and jersey instead of multi-layers. Sure beats 21F last week.

It's been shirt-sleeve riding for the past few days. Woohoo!

Been riding all along though. Last week was cold.

I haven't stopped riding. I drove today because I need the extra time due to a heavy work load at work today and a scout meeting tonight, but I would have rather been on the bike x100.
I actually rode home last night in bike shorts, a long sleeve alertshirt, and some thin running tights and summer shoes. Got a little muddy though.
The humidity is unbelievable. Everything in my garage has condensation all over it.

It's about 35C° warmer here today than last Thursday.

(that's a 63F° difference, I had to look up the increment conversion)

Odd stuff.

+1 on never stopping. The major difference is that I could leave the fleece pullover, hat, and winter gloves at home.

Strange, 1 ft of fresh snow and 8 F last week, 64 F and green grass everywhere this week. Definitely NOT normal for Buffalo NY in January. My 7 year old daughter is quite bumbed... no playing in the snow this week. It even smelled like spring yesterday.

Happy riding,
André

Here in eastern MA, I've been commuting most days apart from 2 weeks when the snow was nasty on the roads (no studs), but ironically, while today it was a nice comfortable temp, the roads were damp and filthy, and so am I. I have a 4 mile commute, so temp issues are pretty minimal. I was even pretty comfortable last week when it was 5-10F.

Here in sunny SoCal (it was raining for the past few days), I made my first commute of 2008. It was a nice 42 F morning ride. Since I had been off the bike for 3 weeks, I definitely felt it... but it was a great ride this morning.

I wish, oh I wish. Today's a work from home day, and then I have to go to class at 5. Won't even have time for a fun ride, sigh.

71F in east tennessee right now, no work commute today, but i've taken up running to make the requirement for this springs fire dept physical agility test. so i cycled down to a track that is nice and quiet and ran my mile with only a couple short breaks of a minute or less. respectable, i felt, because i really hate running. perfect weather, although i've been riding in all sorts of conditions. nothing like the folks in the northeast and northwest are taking on, though.

I've ridden just about every day since New Year's but took today off because of a saddle sore that developed all of the sudden. Hoping a day off with treatment will take care of it, but it's a shame to miss riding on such a beautiful day -- low 70s here in NC.
