Campy 10spd crank arm pedal spindle hole washer?

Hi,

I recently bough a used Veloce 10spd compact crank from CL. I noticed the pedal spindle hole have different interface. The left crank arm has a flat surface hole, but the right arm has a countersunk hole. Is this the way it supposed to be? I've previously only used Shimano cranks which have flat hole surface. If the Campy right arm pedal hole has a countersunk surface, how does the pedal spindle sit properly against the crank arm? Thoughts?

I'd guess there's a washer still stuck in the arm, take a small flat screwdriver and see if it doesn't just pry out.

I think it's the right side arm is missing a washer which fits in the countersunk hole. The left arm hole obviously has a steel washer of some sort to provide an interface with pedal spindle. You can tell it's a different material from aluminum. I tried to pry the countersunk hole, but it's a part of the arm I think.

Having used Campag for a while now I know that is exactly the sort of strange thing they would do.

That's not the most recent Veloce crankset/is not the same design as the Centaur/Record ones I have, but I did some Googling for you and there does indeed to be a difference between the left and right crank pedal holes.

If you Google '10 speed veloce crankset', go to images, and find one that looks like yours, you can compare it to what you have.

Campagnolo are known for having funny little anomalies like that - I remember that on the old 10 speed Record levers the cables entered in slightly different places on the left and right shifters. They have a tendency to 'over engineer' things. Welcome to the wonderful world of Campagnolo.

That would only make sense if the right and left pedals had different interfaces with the crank to match, one flat, one tapered. It's not like one needs greater surface area on one to prevent it from backing out, cranks are right and left threads specifically to counteract that.

I think the concave one has a washer missing, like on the other arm, my guess is flat on one side and convex on the other side. The curvature allows the washer to align better with any variation in the pedal surface there. Just like concave/convex washers on V-brake pads.
