Back on Bike after Broken Leg?
Anyone who has broken their ankle or leg, did you wear some sort of walking boot the first couple of weeks of riding before just going to a ankle stablizer/support? I'm looking at this as it's several inches shorter than the boot I have now: https://amazon.com/gp/product/B0030C...63B9FWQO&psc=1 I'm not sure if it will work on the pedal though. How long did you ride the first day? Did you ice afterwards? I have an appointment on July 9th and if all goes well he said I should be able to walk in the boot - though I am able to now pretty good but am limiting it to only a few minutes a day. I have great range of motion due to light stretching each evening and can bear really good weight on it. I'm hoping to ride on the day of my appointment and just trying to prepare for it. Thanks... : )

I've had a hairline fracture in one of my heels, broken the big bone in one lower leg & knee surgery. all those things happened before I got back into cycling. but from what I remember, I was very protective & very careful about being able to walk normally without any aides. have you tried stationary bikes? might be an interesting experiment (& good physical therapy) before getting on a real bike. you never know, your foot might be really really sore after doing something new like riding a bike. I know it's summer, but you may need to be more patient. I can't imagine riding a bike with a foot boot / brace like that. what if you have to stop short & put a foot down quickly. what if your only option is the booted foot? will it slide out & cause a fall?

Every injury is different. Everyone heals differently. This is like asking "How long after a heart attack did you get back on the bike?"

I bought a bike trainer and started out on that. My first bike ride was only about 2 or 3 miles, and it was hard. It took another two years before I could really stand up on the pedals and hammer on a hill.
Best of luck with your recovery.

Like everyone else has said, it's really going to depend on your injury. I've had two recent tibial tubercle osteotomies which essentially involves the surgical breaking of the tibial tubercle (which is then moved into a different position and screwed back in). I was completely non-weight bearing on the surgical side for six weeks. After those six weeks I was allowed to ride my bike inside on a trainer (assuming I had the range of motion) and then after another six weeks I was allowed to ride outside. The idea being that if I were to fall off my bike I would break, or perhaps shatter, at least the upper part of my tibia. Both of those landmarks were pending xrays to make sure that the bone was healing. The trainer riding was also a matter of starting with very light resistance and gradually moving up. I wasn't really given strict guidelines to that end, especially the second time, but the idea was to make sure I wasn't pushing myself on the bike.
Either way, I highly suggest getting a referral to a physical therapist. I also would try to prepare yourself for the idea that you might not be allowed to ride on the 9th, at least not outside.

+1 on the physical therapist. I had a mid-shaft tib/fib break after getting hit by a car when I was 20. Started riding outside as soon as the second cast came off. Most of the discomfort was from moving my ankle again but it loosened up pretty quick. I knew that there was a risk of breaking it again but I was young and stupid. Highly recommend that you get PT and ride on the trainer for awhile . Good luck!
