Grabbed this '98 or '99 Trek 800 Sport 13” on Fb Marketplace for $20. Wheels are straight and smooth and I am guessing they are still the original tires. Chain is shot and I did not try to change gears either but appears to have lived outside but covered. This one migrated to central Ohio from Tennessee.

Planning to use this frame for my daughter instead of the 800 Sport women’s frame I have.

I’ll remove the crank and start frame cleanup.

Finally made arrangements to grab this one. If Bikepedia can be trusted, this looks like a 2005 and is loaded with original parts. It has Tektro brakes and Shimano trigger shifter/brake assemblies. The frame has a fair amount of water in it. Fork has resistance but spit out water when turned upside down. Most likely gointg to be an organ donor for the 800 Sport WSD.

Been slim pickings at the scrapyard recently. Today however, I brought home a serviceable mystery meat 8 speed hybrid wheelset, and nice Specialized rear wheel with a 6 speed Deore UG hub and cassette.

This morning I cut this very nice Sunshine Gyro master hub out of a crushed wheel. I shutter to think about what happened to the rest of the bike.

No one ever listens to Admiral Akbar. I went for a $25 kids mountain bike and there where 4 bikes waiting for me. $12.50 each, how could I say no?

I had originally been after the blue Trek 200 with the ridged fork. Its got a steel frame and is heavier than the more recent grey Trek 220 with the aluminum frame and suspension fork, but I have plenty of aluminum bits to replace all the steel components, and I think I'll be single speeding it also. The grey Trek will get tuned up as is and the kid will have options.
The Tarantula is apparently a high end big box bike, i.e. Target not Walmart, but is in nice shape, and will get re homed. The Dimondback Ascent looks to be a 1993. Its got Altus
bits on it, which are not so exciting, but the frame is clean. My primary ride right now is a very beat up single speed DB Ascent of a slightly different vintage, so I'm interested to ride this a bit as is.

The original owner was 5'8". Said the bike shop set it up for him and it was his college commuter.

P.S. I got the tape measure out and the top tube is "only" 23.5 inches. The catalog shows the seat tube as being measured to the top of its "extension, but it actually seem to be to "top of top tube" So this bike is a "Large" frame but not an " Extra Large" I'll be directly comparing its geometry to that of my single speed Ascent, I think I have 4 Ascent's in the bike pile now. Only one is correctly mountain bike sized for me.

These came from the area north of North East and south of Lancaster. I have a theory about the area and other similar spots. They are wonderful places to ride a bike, but the road traffic has quadrupled in 20 years, so lots of low milage garage queens.

The county I live in is a peninsula, but was historically referred to as "The Isle of" because before the bridges got built everything came in by boat. With out getting to deep into a civics lesson people have been importing junk here for 300 years. And it doesn't have any where to go but the scrapyard or the local auction house.
I check the scrap yard most mornings and drink in the spectical of 300 years of material culture being crushed. (Any one want a 10 foot bed belt drive lathe).... Act now..
The auction house is no fun after the covid shift to on line, which makes sense as they make more money with less work. Less fun and more expensive has kind of killed it for me, but I still occasionally preview to check the "barn finds"

Grabbed this Schwinn High Plains this morning. Apparently it was owned a by mechanic after my own heart. Its a lugged 90's mountain bike with splatter paint, who could resist? I'll be stripping this one directly, and am interested to see what the bare frame weighs with out all the steel and Shimano 200 GS bits.

Love the rock spacer...
Nice basic bike which should clean up pretty well with the addition of some spares around the house and a new chain.
No front wheel?

It's missing the original wheel. I probably have a match, near match in the pile. The paint has a bunch of chips and rust spots, but black bikes are easy to touch up, so depending on how it shines up, I might build it with better components.

The Christmas rush is on! I almost left these, but horizontal drop outs and cantilever brakes are not that common. And I have a wide set of chrome motorized dirt bike bars, that make a sound like Klunk every time I move them. It has an aluminum chainring on the Ashtabula cranks, a single Suntour power shifter and matching stem and seat clamp. So another bike and no idea where I'm going to stash it.. The mixtie is rougher shape with some mis-matched components, in including a Raleigh branded Suntour GT rear derailleur. The claw is bent , but the mechanism looks fine. I was going to strip the bike there, but the $5 dollars I would save spending an hour kneeling in the half frozen mud got deprioritized. The frame is kind of rough, but the aluminum bits are clean, as is the headset and bottom bracket. The freewheel is grungy, but has a 34t cog, so that wheel went in the van..
