Stripped lockring threads on Deore XT hub

I was swapping out cassettes to transform my Pugsley back to a Krampug. Rear wheel has Shimano Doere XT hub. Cassette is one of the new sunrace extended-range 9 speed. I have replaced/swapped cassettes dozens of times, so I dont know what I did wrong (cross-threaded lockring or didn't have 11 cog positioned right); Anywhoo .. I cranked good on it and it was tightening and then slipped. I backed off the lockring, and there was a nice sliver of metal between the threads and in the freehub. The lockring will will still grab initially but then slips and spins out.

Basically, I want to know how much I am in for here. Can the cassette body just be replaced or do I need a whoe new hub and wheel rebuild?

Not 100% certain/clear: were the freehub threads damaged as well? If not, you just need a new another cassette lockring. See a local bike shop if they have one off a worn cassette (make sure it is for the number of teeth on the smallest sprocket of your cassette - they differ in outer diameter depending on whether it's 11, 12, 13...).

If the threads on the freehub are damaged, then you'd need a new freehub (mechanism, not the whole hub, if you can source it) - can't think of another way to repair that. Something like this (make sure it's matching to your current, so remove and check the back side interface):

Your Shimano freehub is probably steel. It's likely the aluminum lockring that failed. Clean the freehub threads and try another lockring.

Shelby has a point there.
You can buy a freehub, in fact I just did that for a wheelset that I have. The bad thing about Shimano hubs is that although the cones and bearings are readily available and inexpensive, the freehubs are not.
What is the part number on the hub? You can look up the EV PDF at https://si.shimano.com/#/

I recently bought off ebay a whole Deore XT (10spd) hub for $14 inc shipping so perhaps buying a whole hub and just taking off the freehub may be more economical.
