Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Beware of Plastic Bags!!

I was coming back from a ride and had just started climbing a steep and narrow part of the bride (Queensboro/Ed Koch) when I noticed that the wind had blown a plastic bag up against my rear wheel and derailleur. I was going to pull over 25 feet up ahead where its wider and flatter and address the bag, but the bag beat me to it. The bag got caught in the derailleur gears, snapped the cable, chain and derailleur hanger, as well as breaking the derailleur itself and bending the wheel.

All things considered it could have been worse since there was an LBS across the street and a craft beer pub to wait while they repaired my ride.

On the other hand, I ran out of spare tubes one day. So for my third flat, I found a plastic bag and wrapped it around the hole in the tube 4-5 times eld and stuffed it in the tire. I forgot about it, and a week later realized it still held air.

Those things are awful. A bag blew into my back drivetrain once and it took removing the derailleur pulleys to get rid of it all.

They're supposed to be better for us than paper bags, aren't they?

To me that was good JuJu to be at a beer joint when you broke down and a LBS! The Cycling Gods were looking upon you my friend.

A plastic bag got me as well. It became entangled in the rear derailleur and rear brake. I cleared the mess, but the rear wheel was slightly warped. A truing job fixed the wheel.

Yes. Beware of plastic bags!!

Never had a plastic bag do that but did cut through a weedy pathway once, damn weeds got caught up around the DR pulleys and I had to stop and clear them out before I could move. Ground to halt pretty quick and was lucky I was barely moving or the entire derailer would of snapped off. I can see where a plastic bag could wreak havoc on the entire drive train.
