Ever been chased or (gulp) bitten by a dog while riding?

Yes and yes. The dog had no shots and was quarantined. After that I take no chances and I if they step on the road, I pepper spray them...check your local laws. Cheers.

My most recent doggie chase was by a Rottweiler with ill intentions. I was riding up a one mile 6% grade at about the halfway point. No way I was going to outrun him. I unclipped and dismounted and used the bike to shield me.
I slowly walked away from him but he was not having it and continued to lunge at me. A lady driving a Prius approached from up the hill and drove in between myself and the dog and honked her horn. I was able to walk about 100 yards up the road then remount to get away.
A dog like that could have easily hospitalized me. It sucks being vulnerable on a bike with a far too aggressive canine.

Maybe a slow fat lab. I had one chase me on the flats a few weeks back. Got up to about 20mph then gave up. But remember, something like a grayhound, whippit, borzoi, or irish wolfhound, (basically the sight hounds) can really move. I think a fast grayhound can reach 40+mph.

I often wonder what I would do if I'm chased by a dog while riding uphill. I suppose I could dust it on a flat and downhill but when I'm on the saddle going slow uphill, that's when it's sure to happen. Can't kick it since I'm clipped in and would probably fall anyway. Hopefully it nevers happens but what can one do to come out of it unscathed?
Done it many times.

35 or 40 years ago, I was riding into town on a relatively busy street when I saw a German Shepherd escape his kennel on the opposite side of the road. When he made a snarling beeline for me with murder in his eyes, I started pedaling for my life. But he had the angle on me. Suddenly I heard a big thump and cry; the dog had been hit and soon died. The driver stopped and was both consoling the owner and telling me how lucky I was.

I got into "serious" riding late 70s, early 80s. That was when dogs would roam the street. It only takes one meeting with the Campy pump head to train any dog.
