Snapping the little nub on the end of the chain link?
I just dropped a new crankset and bottom bracket and chain on to my mountain bike. When I installed the chain, there was a small part pretruding out, having hard time trying to get a grip on it to snap off?
Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated!
Thanks

Pretruding to the outside of the bike direction, about 3/16 it's on a shimano CN 93 chain.
I tried to add the pic but not allowing me yet!

Use a Quick-Link of some kind. Messing with pins is obsolete.

I think you are describing the special pin that comes with some Shimano chains. If so, just break if off with pliers as in post #5 . Even Shimano is now moving to quick links and you can add one if you like to make removal and installation easier. Any brand will do if it's the proper "speed" for your chain.

Usually the pin is sticking out a lot farther, not this one. I just found a KWC quick link, i didn't see it in the chain breaker container! I'm good now!
Thanks

I've seen chains that come in OEM or bulk packaging with a bit of pin stuck in one end. Not the same as the Shimano assembly pin and should be pushed out and discarded. Maybe that's what OP had. Glad it's resolved.

If the errant pin is in one of the links at one of the chain's ends, establish your chain length, and adjust your chain length at that end. I never installed a chain that I didn't have to remove 2-4 links. Installing a "quick kink", as mentioned in a previous post, is good advice.

If the pin is in properly just use some needle nose pliers or in a pinch I have used cable cutters to snap it off. Though yeah use quick links they are awesome.

Most chains these days have swagged pins and are not designed to be reused. As a couple others have stated, use a quick link.
