Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Helmet mirrors suck. At least in my experience.

If (when) I ever get another, it will definitely be this.

Since I always wear glasses (safety glasses) when I ride, I use a mirror that attaches to the glasses. I believe that the the brand is "Take-a-Look". They are brass and some other metal (therefore bendable) with a rectangular mirror. Works for me.

Get a handlebar mirror if you are going to get a mirror. Personally, helmet mirrors look ridiculous, and the mirror on the end of the bars can be removed if you are racing.

Take-a-look, you can mount it to the helmet but I prefer mounting it to sunglasses.

When I got old, and head-turning wasn't working, I went to a helmet mirror. It was fine. But then I tried a Take-a-Look mounted to glasses. It's a nice mirror. Let's say you are riding in heavy car-traffic, and you need to make a left turn. You can size up what is behind you, while keeping an eye forward at all times. I like it. But I also like side mirrors on my car. I remember when cars didn't have side mirrors (That's how old I am).

I'm an old fart. I also like Dinotte taillights, to alert/wake-up cagers, "Bicycle 200 hundred yards ahead" so they don't run up my ass before they see me, brake hard, and honk because they are frustrated, and make both of our lives unpleasant. They see me way ahead, and have time to cooly look at behind traffic, and make smooth, wide-bearth passes. I'm not from New Hampshire, I don't get any money for promoting Dinotte, the lights just work!

I see dark-clad weight-weenie roadies, who think cagers are their enemy, and they are really stupid people. It's not a case, of "I have a right to the road,", it's a case of, "I can announce my presence to you cagers, and give you space and time to figure out calmly how to go around me," or "I can make my low visability a negative problem to you."

I hate our bike lanes. The city lets the cars move bike-tire-flattening detritus to the bike lanes, where **** accumulates, in the old days, I had my taillight on in the vehicular lane, and 99.99% of drivers were cool passing me. A once-a-month yahoo, that was tolerable. Now we have a stupid law, "if there is a bike lane, bikes have to be in it, we don't care if you get broken bottle, goat-head thorn and winter-sanding sharp spicule flats." That's so biking friendly. Not really.

I recently got a Take-a-Look and now like it a lot. Do admit to when I first put it on my helmet, thinking, jesus if I crash and it goes in my face????
but then I got over it and it works fine, doesnt vibrate all to hell on a bad road like bar or hood mirrors Ive used touring. And I like the fact that it is not convex, so while it is a small view, it shows things as they are which I prefer than the wideangle effect my older ones had.

I sure as heck wouldnt wear one in a group ride, I dunno, the crash side of things being so much possible, I dont think Id be comfortable with it right near my face, but for the type or riding I do, its really nice to be back with a mirror. Safer, more relaxing, they work.

+1 for the Take-A-Look mirror. I've been commuting with one for the last couple of months, and I love it.

In a crash the take-a-look would more than likely swivel to the side or fall off. Death or serious injury is what worries me about crashing.

IMO the take a look mirror is the best glasses mounted one out there. However, having said that I have never been able to get used to them, and yes I've given them a serious try. I much prefer a handle bar mounted mirror as they are much easier to use.

Mirror mounted glasses are better than helmet mirrors. Your helmet gets knocked around and stuff in it or on it. You tend always to be gentle with glasses. If you own more than one helmet ? ? ?

I've used both extensively. Take A Look is by far the best.

When there's lots of road spray that would mess up lenses, I wear my Take A Look on a set of sunglasses with the lenses popped out.

As far as having the thing fly into your eye goes, that would require more than extraordinary bad luck (far more than the safety benefit provided by the mirror). And yes, I've crashed a couple times wearing the mirror where my helmet hit the ground.

one that won't break off and drive like a sharp metal spear through your cheek (if your're lucky), or shatter and pierce your eyes with small shards of glass if you have a wreck?

Or make you look like an absolute Fred?

Don't remember who makes mine but it's a helmet mirror that attaches with double sided tape to the helmet. It's jointed at two points and is easily adjustable. It does get knocked around a bit each time I take off the helmet but I can always get it set right back up. Easy to adjust if I'm on the hoods or in the drops. Same for the winter time when I'd wear a hat under my helmet so it would fit different. Lots of time wind noise and such keep me from hearing cars approaching from the rear but the mirror always lets me know. I cannot image riding without one.

Cycleaware is what I use. Both the helmet mount and their glasses mount one.
The reason I use one on a helmet is so I can use goggles in cold weather.

that is how I look at it, esp re: the safety benefit advantage. As I said, I used hood mounted ones for years and years, and now with the Take a Look one attached securely to my helmet visor, the rearview vision is really so much better because of the lack of vibration.

rangerd-your comments on the gory side of possible stuff--heck, who knows, it probably could happen, but my take on is that its pretty unlikely and in the end I see the % of your scenarios being pretty small.

as for your Fred comment.....

all I can say is safe riding, its too bad you are so concerned by how you look.

Take-a-look on a helmet with a visor. On glasses is fine, too.

I never got accustom to using a mirror. Sorry. Maybe you could try riding into traffic so you can see all the angry masses? Ikid, Ikid.

I tried a mirror for 2 months and had so many moments where my perception of "too close" was affecting my judgment. I noticed when I don't use a mirror, I have zero issues and a lot less "butt pucker moments." Drivers are going to drive at a distance THEY feel is comfortable, even if its too close for my personal tastes, its better that they just get by than me fling myself into a ditch like a crazed drug addict.

Here's a link to a helmet mirror I just bought. Pricey, but it got good reviews on the Amazon.com site, and I like the attachment system. After I receive it and use it, I will post a review. I also considered getting the Take-a-Look mirror and attaching it to my helmet with plastic wire-ties.
