I would advise being very careful with rear wheels that claim 7/8/9 speed compatibility. I bought one of these put on a Shimano 9 speed cassette and thought i as OK until my first ride. When I shifted the rear derailleur to the 2nd innermost gear I got the most awful racket which turned out was the derailleur cage hitting the spokes. I had to have the rear wheel re-dished which added $50 to the cost of the wheel but after that I was fine.

Yes, I've seen the SunXCD hubs, similar also these ones:

I think the problem is that there are hardly any 5/6spd cassettes anymore, and probably close to none with a higher gear ratio

I have mounted a 9 speed cassette with a Shimano Dura-Ace 7700 Derailleur.
It works great!

Where, when, and from whom did you get the RAR8? Bitex doesn't list it as current, as far as I can see.
That's I think the problem with old threads - the topic may be current, but the info may be stale. Somebody tht calls themselves 'roicycles' has some, but the RAR8 appears to be unobtanium.

It's not hard to re-space old steel frames, the rack wouldn't make it difficult, you just have to take care that you bend both sides equally, and check/adjust dropout alignment when you're done.
