Hello,

My brother is moving away from Chicago and doesn't want to move his bikes to the new location. I told him he could send them to me and I would tune them up/sell them and split the proceeds with him. They are not vintage bikes.

So, I need suggestions for a good place that packs/ships bikes. The brother lives on W. Van Buren Street across the highway from the University of IL Chicago. A shop close to that would be ideal.

How much are they actually worth? Your brother may be better off just listing them on CL as-is, shipping is going to cost $50 or better per bike, and if you are paying someone to box it up you're tossing another $50 or so on top of that. Add the cost of consumable replacements, you could easily be approaching $200 just to get each bike in sellable shape. If they aren't higher end bikes, you may never recoup that cost over just selling them locally in whatever condition they currently sit.

I think they are mid range road bikes from around 10 years ago. Might be carbon. They are set up as tri bikes.

This idea doesn't make sense, unless there's a reason why your brother doesn't want the bikes at his new location. If he's going to ship them to you, he can just as easily ship them to himself at the new location, no?


I like the local C/L idea, with him selling them "as is" before he departs. That makes the most sense. Subtracting the shipping costs can give him an idea of where to price them.

+1 on selling on CL. If the bikes need to be tuned up, he can probably get a bulk discount by bringing them all in for service at once. Ready-to-ride bikes sell much quicker than as-is at least in my local area.

They haven't ridden the bikes in about 5 years. Now they are into weight lifting and think they need upright hybrids. In truth, they just want them gone. So, they would give them to me if would pay to have them shipped. Then I could do whatever I wanted with them. They are supposed to be getting me model numbers so I can tell them how much to list the bikes for on CL.
