I live on a small farm that my wife and I carved out here in the wilderness.

So, I have plenty of space to build stuff for my bikes.

I know NOTHING about the different kinds of jumps and options in building one. Do any of you folks have good links to resources for various types of man-made biking structures ,like dirt jumps, North Shore stuff, whatever.

I tried briefly searching aorund the forums here, but kept getting hits of kids showing off their latest jumps, but not much useful information for building one.. I hope to be one of those kids (albeit a bit older) showing off my jumps soon. hehe

I have access to tractors, dozers and stuff. Not as readily as I'd like, though.

If you've got your own farm and access to tractors, the hard part is done. I live in Southern Oregon, and we have had at least five of our spots torn down in the last five or six years. Making dirt jumps is pretty basic. Make sure you pack in the dirt as you're building the thing. Don't wait to have a five foot pile of loose dirt, the thing will never harden. When you get a lip all piled and packed in, put a final layer of dirt on the face of the jump and pack that and add/remove dirt as necessary to get a smooth curve. Look at the lip from the side. If you can see any kinks, smooth em out. The smoother the better. Locally we believe that only good lips will echo if you stand in front of them and talk to them. (Sounds funny but it's true.) Landings are basic. Pile, pack, repeat. One of the main builders here is 41 years old, he rides. Good luck to you.

Thats the thing... I am not even sure what a lip is. but I'm guessing that's the edge of the jump, and that would be the important part, since that is where your bike leaves the jump, and it sets the angle of the jump.

the best part about noreth shore is you can think up your own ideas on what you want. ins not to expensive either. about 30 bucks for a super good 12 ft long ladder

Yeah, I have been eyeing some of the north shore stuff I have been seening on DVDs. Mine on the other hand will be a LOT tamer than some of those crazy crap... They scare me. hehe

o yeah. I just build a 12 ft ladder, heres how i'm gonnna set it up. one side is gonna be about 3 or 4 ft off the ground and the other about 5 or 6 high. IT will have a 2 ft kiccker up to it, and the highest side is gonna drop into the landing of the first jump in a six pack.

Good stuff here. I also just read Mat Hoffman's book.. Geez. I feel old, even tho I am same age as Mat. I'm ready to give BMX a try for first time since I was like 10. No, I'm not gonna pull any 360's, but I am gonna have FUN!

Ok i've read this thread and nobody really told you how to do it. If you're wanting to do dirt ramps, what i usually do is use old refridgerators and pack dirt around it to make the ramp, you can also use big logs or anything with a similar shape to it(small children, dead animals, etc.)

Yeah I am probably going to do big logs and old hay bales. Those are in heavy supply around here Dirt can be a little harsh to come by, it's full of big rocks around this part of Missouri. So that can make it a bit expensive to purchase good dirt and backbreaking to gather your own dirt and take out all the big rocks. So having fillers like logs, hay and fridges like you say, would help a lot by cutting down on the needed dirt.

i live in Central New Jersey, there are some places by my house to ride, we have some small trails in a few of the woods. Me and my friend just fixed up a jump today and were shredding it ill have pictures posted up soon.
