An 84 Stumpjumper SC arrived today. It's kind of an interesting bike so I figured I'd start a thread on the build. The SC came with black Shimano Deerhead components.

Can anyone with an 84 Stumpjumper SC (or any 84 SJ) confirm the original:

Seatpost - ?
Seat - Avocet Touring?
Chain - ?
Grips- ?

Confirmed:
Wheels - Saturae X28
Hubs - Specialized Sealed

Here it is out of the box. Wheelset, post and seat were all wrong and will get replaced. It's going to get cables/chain/grease/etc.

Nice bike. Here are some photos of a 1985 Rockhopper that I restored. It also had the dearhead derailleurs.

That is a well equipped bike.

I believe what you have is the black M700 XT that has faded to a dark grey though.

The Specialized specs page found at the link I posted below shows Suntour mechanicals for all the pre-1985 Stumpjumpers listed. I can’t vouch for its accuracy. The chart doesn’t include post and saddle info; too bad. Hopefully someone chimes in.

Yeah you are correct. The underside of the parts are black. Will fix the first post.

I love old Stumpies and this is a good one. Fun rehab. I wouldn't be so quick to ditch that seatpost. It has character in a funky sort of way. That may have been an after market upgrade? Beats me but I'd check it out.

The chain stays are chrome under the paint.



The steel brake hardware and the derailleurs were kind of funky. I had some nice identical Deerhead bits and swapped those in.

The seat post in the pic was on my shelf. The bike came with a steel POS post. I'll like this funky adjustable SR post and will probably run with it, but would like to find the correct seat post if possible to have it available.

My 84 Sport came with a run-of-the-mill SR Laprade. It’s beat up, but I might be able to get to it after work and snap some pix for you.

Sweet bike! That is maybe the one mountain bike model I'd give up my 85 Schwinn Cimarron for. It would be so nice to pair with my 84 Specialized Expedition.

I have the same seat post (with allen bolt and not QR lever) on my Cimarron and I really like it.

Some pics of the SC back together and rideable. The wheelset is BX25/Exage/Ground Control from a late 80s Rockhopper. Close enough until I find the right wheels.

One unexpected bonus is the pull on the Deerhead shifter ratcheting clicks almost exactly match the 7spd cassette spacing.

I have a set of wheels from an 85 SJ Sport that match your description. They are bolt on, not sure if your's originally came with those or quick-release.

I also have a SR Laprade seat post that matches the one TheGoldenBoy showed above. I'm not sure if it came from my SJ or my 1st mtb, an 84 Miyata RidgeRunner. Probably doesn't matter, but it is short, 26.8 and dark grey with the flutes as pictured above.

I do really like these hubs but since you're trying to restore your bike to original spec I could be convinced to keep them together with the X28 rims. Let me know if you're interested in this stuff.

original hubs on my '84 SC were bolt-on, but most people swapped in hollow axles to be able to do quick-release.
IIRC, the seatpost was a standard SR Laprade. (mine was tossed almost immediately due to being too short for my ape index and replaced with a Suntour XC.)

as a special edition, the SC had several odd bits on it.
most notably, it was one of the first MTBs to wear black anodized components.
Tomaselli motorcycle brake levers, Shimano Biopace Chainrings, wide Saturne rims with Specialized Tri-Cross tires (in 1.5 width?!) slingshot stem with matching Splzd bars.. they just didn't know what they were doing with Mountain Bikes back then yet!

last time i saw mine it was almost 20 years old already, wearing a Chris King Headset, Phil hubs and Bottom Bracket, the aforementioned Suntour XC Seatpost and a matching set of Suntour XC 'Bear Trap' oval pedals (complete with plastic toe clips held on by the special Bear Trap pedal reflector adapters), a Breeze and Angell Hite Rite seat post dropper (with an inner tube over the seatpost to protect the grease on it), narrower Saturae rims (because Spclzd had given up on the Saturne name by then) and a set of much larger than stock (probably Ritchey Quad) tires.

that's about what it looked like when some little pr*ck kicked in my laundry room door on the last day of school and made off with it. i'm sure he had no idea of all the places that bike had been, and little-to-no appreciation for what it was. even as much of a tank as it was, i sometimes wish i still had it.

What a great bike! My ‘83 Stumpy has the same SR Laprade fluted seatpost. I’d run with what you’ve got.

I too swapped out the solid axles for QR, a fairly simple job. The original wheel set was in good condition so I found a spare Araya 26x1.75 rim at the co-op to match and build into a dynamo hub so I can commute in the dark.

Despite the pretty serious wheel flop, it’s a really fun bike and actually handles front lowrider panniers quite well for bikepacking. It’s realy nice when a bike you have lusted after for so long lives up to your aspirations and you truly fall in love with it. I hope this one rides well for you!

You have probably move from that project, but any in case

Grips OGK foam with red vinyl cap ends as you have
Seatpost: SR Laprade flutted with black accesents
Saddle: Avocet Touring II, as that was the top of the line
Chain: Shimano UG Silver/Black, longer
Wheels: Saturne HX28, I believe H stands for Hard Anodized as it had the darker anodized version of the X28s. Other than that one of the most original SC I have seen.

I'm sorry they took your rare bike, do you remember the serial number, I am trying to determine when these were made and estimate production numbers, also were the rims the flat and wide Saturne HX-32 or the more svelte HX-28, I'm guessing the later since the narrow tires.

What 7-speed cassette did you use? I wonder if by measuring the movement with each click if you could make adjustment to the spacers in the cassette to make it Index.

Would you share the serial number of your bike, I am trying to estimate production period and number, so far I have bikes made from April to July of 1984 and no number exceeding 100, and guessing similar production numbers as for the 1985 Team Stumpjumper

no, sorry, S/N records are long gone.

IIRC, the rims were the wider version; they were trying out wide rims with narrow tires then. (remember when i said they didn't know what they were doing then? ) that's why i changed them to a narrower rim (as soon as i proved them unsatisfactory).
i don't remember exactly and i may be mistaken, but i think both original and replacement rims had a sort of U-shaped cross-profile.

I appreciate your reply, the X32s are similar to the X22 above in profile, X28s had the U profile you may be referring to. I think X28 would have held 1.95" tires, but perhaps not 2.125" I think the SC came with 1.95" tires
