New iPhone - time to upgrade from 6s?

I've been rocking the iPhone 6s since it first came out in September 2015. Now that the iPhone 11 is out, I'm starting to wonder if it is time to upgrade. But man, phones are so freaking expensive now. Gesh.

How do you guys decide if it is time for a new phone? Any one factor push you over the top? And any advice/ideas on my situation? Cheers.

I get a new phone when my old one stops working. Currently using a Note 8, which I bought used, a year old, at 1/3 its original price. 🙂

The 6s is still fine.

The 11 will still be available in a few months.

Seems you have a bit of "upgraditis". Wait a bit, and maybe, it will pass.

I had a 6S for a couple of years. Had a recall for the battery life and when they replaced the battery they somehow damaged the screen connections so I got a new screen, as well. Phone worked good before and better after. But, it didn't survive a dive off of the car roof so I replaced it with an XR. Other than the pain in the ass Face ID, and no headphone jack, I perceive no functional difference.

Some folks get a new phone every time a new one comes out.
Not me, I get one, when my old one stops working or starts having issues.

I currently have an Samsung S9+. I only got it because my S6 was having issues with the battery holding a charge and rebooting.

I don't have any games or music on mine, but I have a lot of apps for work, personal or hobbies and I hate re-setting everything up and remembering where it all is..

i upgraded my iPhone (6 to X after 4 years) for an oled screen, wireless charging, better processor and learning accelerators, better battery life and better security features. I’ll wait to see how 5g works out, especially it’s coverage, for my next iPhone upgrade.

I had to get an iphone 6s+ when my company went to an 8 character pass-code, and our IT only supported fingerprint phone unlock for the apple. It was 4 years ago, and I'm still pissed about it. I sincerely hope I'm not forced to get another iphone when this one stops working.

I did. I don't regret it.

I had a 6, and I knew it was time to upgrade when another parent at baseball practice opened his email, searched and located the email we were trying to find, and I was still on the Gmail loading screen. He was on an 8.

Performance difference is huge, and the camera(s) just about make having a 'nice' camera obsolete. And battery life (finally) rocks. I am going 24hrs+ before thinking about plugging it in.

Considering you've held onto the 6S for so long, no reason to think you wouldn't do the same, so $1100 amortized over 5 years is not bad. Or get the 11 for $750. But the third camera and the night mode are really something to consider.

and it's SO much nicer to just pick up the phone and swipe up. Face ID is fast, and I will not miss having to click 3 times just to open the phone.

My samsung Galaxy S5 started having all sorts of problems... screen going bonkers, phone locking up, home button loose, usb connector loose... I mean it was a nightmare.

So I bought a refurbished S5 for 79 bucks... upload my back up data, moved my SIM and microSD, and back in business.

Thousand dollar phones... NFW.

I may someday upgrade to a $300 refurbed S9... someday. But whatever... it WILL have a headphone jack.

Phone fashion wars... HA! You've got to be kidding.

BTW the "thin wars" finally hit a limit... the new "fruit fone" is slightly thicker... to accomodate a bigger battery.

OK, now bring back the audio jack.

@njkayaker you could have something there about the upgraditis. After four years of having the same phone, I am wanting something else. Want and need though are completely different animals.

@superdex well that's kind of the same boat I'm in. I hold on to my phones for several years (I went from the 4s to the 6s). So I'm looking holding my phones for at least four years. In which case as you mentioned, amortizing the phone over four or five years doesn't make it seem too bad. But still. The price! Gesh.

So to bring this thread to a close. I finally became tired of the battery on my phone dying halfway through the day. Today I sucked it up and bought a new iPhone 11. Here's hoping I'm able to stave off buyers remorse!
