Greetings from the north of Ireland
Hi everyone
and I do hope all is well in your world. My name is Gerry and have spent 56 years on the planet. I have just recently taken up road cycling to help get fit and loose some weight. I managed to get a bike in my local store to start me off and couldn't believe how difficult it was to compete with lots of traffic and the huge trucks which scared the hell out of me. I was so unfit...after a mile I thought about turning back for home and by mile number 3.... I almost cried. I did manage to get home and almost fired the bike into the shed locking the door firmly vowing never to open it again. As the days and nights passed I would swear that I could hear the ghostly pedals and chain go round and round. And another thing....the new cycling gear I bought...well, it didn't look so good on me as it should have. I mean when I looked at other cyclists they looked so slim, slick and cool; but on me I didn't look so slim, sick instead of slick and I also found out that the opposite of cool was.....Me!
Well I did get back on the bike and took a reality check. I started to build up the miles on a quiet off road cycle path which was completely flat and my confidence soared when I reached the 20 mile marker. My weight is coming down and with a new saddle and proper bike fit I am on the up an up. I love getting out and have just started to use a busy route with some moderate hills to challenge myself more. I now intend to join a local group to cycle with but I am rather nervous of this give that they put in lots and lots of miles.
I really enjoy the forum and the tips and skill sharing which goes on all the time.

I have found that a mirror and a bright tail light help much on the roads for safety in the Daytime.

Hi Gerry!
I am from the states and I was recently visiting family in County Donegal. I am used to riding on wider streets than I found there. However I did see quite a few locals riding. I also found most motorists to be considerate of people on bikes. Enjoy the ride!

Hi Abe
Cycling in Donegal is something special but lots of hills as I remember. Cycling has really taken off everywhere these days and its great to see it. People are very good at helping out and I bet thats the same where ever there are cyclists.
