Denver v. Seattle: better cycling city?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Since both states have legalized pot, I suggest this thread be moved to more appropriate forums such as the mtb or the SS/FG forums.

Or even better, the Foo.

Well, judging by the 43-8 whooping Denver is recieving right now I'd have to ride in Denver. Only because you wont run into a detour for the Parade they're going to thow in Seattle.

it's always muggy in seattle, from what I've heard. And Denver is wrapped in snow and ice 4 months of the year.

San Francisco Bay Area.

Neither. Get into the mountains/plains/foothills/farm roads/tops of mesas/valleys/anything but a city.

50+ degree days in Denver in Dec = 14
50+ degree days in Denver in Jan = 13

On another note, I'll have to tread lightly at work tomorrow as Bronco fans will be in a pissy mood.

Whoops, Denver had only 12 days at 50+ in January.

So, I guess Denver really is "wrapped in snow and ice 4 months of the year." lol

Get out of the city and its probably going to be Denver for scenic rides but any one who has been in the Pacific Northwest knows when it is sunny here it is as beautiful as any where and personally I would not want to be any where else. Now after a couple weeks of rain, all bets are off. Not every one likes pot or mountain bikes up here either.

2 of my best friends live in Seattle. If they didn't live there, they'd probably live here. If I didn't live in Denver, I might live in Seattle (or Asheville).

I've lived and cycled in both cities, it's hard to generalize about either, it varies a lot month to month, year to year. Even with the rain in winter, Seattle is a bit better for year round cycling, plus better paved back road network close to city. Denver has a great cycling culture and good riding, winters are best for skiing, forget the bike for a few months and enjoy the wonderful powder in the hills.

I give it to Seattle by 40 points....ride on!!!!

It was eerily empty and quiet except for the occasional cheering from bars we passed (but cold in the low 40's) riding through downtown Seattle Sunday afternoon around 4:00 PM.

I lived and biked in Denver for my much of my first 40 years before moving to Seattle 25 years ago. Riding in Seattle is more interesting, and definitely hillier. We got in a ride just about every weekend this January (more than usual), and we don't typically ride in the rain, but sometimes we come home in it!

Can't really go wrong in either city, and they both have fantastic road riding nearby. I think Seattle wins though.

The North Cascades are a lot more rugged than the Rockies if that's important to you. Best alpine climbing in the lower 48 is in my backdoor.

Supposedly they get 300 days of sunshine every year out in places like Ellensburg, Winthrop, and Cashmere.

Also, we have lakes.

Here are a few pictures from the Leavenworth Loop, about a two hour drive from downtown. Paved road the whole way, 2/3 of it with very little traffic.

Here are a few numbers for you

https://www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/clilcd.pl?wa24233

Seattle averages 225.5 cloudy days a year and has measurable precipitation 154 days a year.

Denver averages 120 cloudy days a year and has measurable precipitation 88.9 days per year.

Colorado has lakes too. Lake Estes is a pleasant 35 mile ride from Boulder, CO. Boulder itself is a 35 minute drive from Denver, CO.

It's true that there are lakes in Colorado, there's also Granby (very nice) and Bear. But Colorado is a pretty arid place and bodies of water are few and far between. For comparison, Lake Chelan is 50 miles from end to end, Ross Lake is 25, Lake Washington is 30, Banks Lake is 35.

Seattle feels claustophic for me, to get away you have to cross this area of water or take the long way around or deal with ferries. While in Denver its just room left and right and nearby Wyoming is nice to be if you can stand the non stop wind.
