Hit up the Blue Ridge Parkway an hour before first light, and did the Thunder Ridge Climb. Amazing ride in the dark (with lights of course) and absolutely no traffic, watching the sun come up over the Blue Ridge mountains, with the clouds and fog-enshrouded mountains spread out below.

30 miles with two friends early-ish this morning before the heat and humidity kicked in full-force.

First ride with my new bike computer and HR monitor. My HR has always trended toward a little bit (relatively) elevated, but BP is in the normal range for my age (all as per my doc). Had a baseline EKG, plus an ECG - No issues whatsoever. I've never experienced anything remotely approaching 'chest pain', even when almost doubled over on the side of the road due to effort. Lungs on fire? Yes. Legs aching? Yes. Chest pain? No way.

The 'standard' 200 minus age formula puts my aerobic range at 110-140 with 164 max (I'm 56). At 164 I wasn't even breathing hard, today at least. I topped out at 179 for a brief bit, and was breathing hard for a little while. But, that's just one ride, so I'm going to watch my HR as I ride normally for a while, then maybe report it to my doc just for the data points.

Temp is supposed to hit 96 today but partly cloudy. Cool(ish) this AM for a 15.5 mile trike ride. Rides are getting earlier and earlier.

A very hot 50 miles today with my buddy, Frank. Nice ride but I just couldn't motivate Frank to kick it in the butt today.

the group of around 15 did 50 miles. There was an option for an additional 6/7 miles but no one had the desire. At 7:30 it was 75 degrees and 90% humidity. By the end of the ride it was 85 degrees and 70% humidity. Like riding in a steam room We are about 50 miles north of Houston. The ground is soaked from all the rain and tropical storm Bill and it just keeps raining

Although I almost never post in these sort of threads, maybe someone will benefit from considering the type of rides I do. This morning was a typical 70 mile ride (we alternate between 40, 70, 90, 120 and 150 mile rides). We woke up at 2:30 AM and hit the road an hour later. In the first 55 miles, five cars had passed us. We did deal with six deer and a skunk, but in an unusual twist there were no foxes or turkeys on the road today. We enjoyed the usual glorious ride that consisted of climbing to the next watershed, rolling twenty miles down a small riverside road, and then climbing back to our home watershed, mostly with pleasant tree farms along the roadside.

With the quality of lights available today, there's no reason to not enjoy the pre-dawn hours for riding. The drunks generally all land by 3:00 AM, leaving the roads free of hazards until the early-riser suburban shoppers fire it up. Sure, it's a bit cooler (I notice some folks complaining about heat above), but there are effective garments available to deal with that. We're fortunate that it rarely gets very cold here (30-35F is considered cold in the winter; typical lows this time of year are in the upper 40s).

Because of rain (and work) hadn't ridden since Tuesday; 25 mile solo ride late this morning and then in the early evening got out on Screamer with my favorite stoker for an 11 mile ride.

104 miles, 8.9K of climbing on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I'm trying to cover more of the parkway further south, but now it's getting a little far to drive in one day, so next time I'll probably need to do an overnighter and stay in a hotel.

This is the first time I've made it down into North Carolina. Started at Gopher Mountain just north of Fancy Gap, and rode down to Doughton Park. This section of the parkway is elevated, but kind of on a plateau, so there wasn't much in the way of mountain vistas. Mostly just rolling farm land and trees. Still one decent climb at the southern end.

Had a variety of weather including the thickest fog I've ever seen, and a nice quick soaking thunderstorm about five miles from the end. Held up pretty well except, as usual, my rear end was complaining.

JimF, that's amazing. I'll bet you weigh less than 200lbs. How many total hours did the trip take including down time (from home and back again)?

15.5 on the most of it before the high winds kicked up. 35mph gusts tried to knock me off the road on the way home.

Well, I'm an early riser, and I actually enjoy a little road trip listening to podcasts. So it was about a 2 hour drive to the start. I spent about 8 hours on the bike, and about 7.5 of that was riding, the rest was resting. Long day, but I didn't have anything else to do

I did my birthday age-miles ride yesterday, loafing a bit in the hills since it was my first longer ride in weeks and rather hot. Too much sun, as I realize today - it felt pretty good yesterday. It wound up 60 miles and nearly four hours.

I used my HR monitor for once, after my 2-week layoff from cycling (broken collarbone) and with the high heat/humidity I wanted to be careful. Trying to keep the HR at 80%-85%, but somehow it seems to fall into a groove at 85%. Probably due to the temperature and lagging hydration.

Well, I had a short... distance-wise, at least... trip this morning. I had to take my car to the shop to get the muffler strap clip replaced, and I thought I'd put the bike on the back and just ride back home.

I was making record time on my way back, and was congratulating myself on my achievement when I heard the dreaded "thump..thump..thump" sound. I look down, and sure enough, my rear tire was flat as a pancake. I'd picked up a nail, and it did a good job of gashing the tube with each "thump", so I got to spend an extra twenty minutes replacing the tube with a new one, reseating and inflating the tire, and putting it back in place. So much for my record time. Sigh.
