Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I am 99.99% done with the build. I have to go spend time with the girlfriend now.... Just need to put on the pedals and cages.

Here are my thoughts.

1) The carbo lock is CRAP. It is a silver cap, and doesn't look good with the frame.

2)The bike is only 14.25 lbs with the following set-up.
deda newton
no name 110mm stem (going to dial in stem size then go thompson.
rolf prima elan aero's
pro race 3 tires
the group buy fork
the pedal force seatpost (it has no decals on it. The bike is totally naked.
Sram red

3) The little rear brake cable guide sucks as well. It seems like it is gonna explode and makes a clicking noise when the bars are turned.

I'm sure PF is reading this thread. I don't care when my frame comes. But I would like a tracking # so I can make sure I'm home. It would be bad news to have this sit on my front porch all day. Hint, Hint. Tracking #s.

I assume https://www.jensonusa.com/store/produ...p.aspx?sc=FRGL is an alternative to the carbolock? Is it proprietary to FSA headsets?

I use one of those FSA's with a carbon steerer and a CC headset on another bike, so perfectly acceptable alternative to the PF one.

My initial thoughts:

frame -
PF Nude RS2 52cm (55cm top tube) weighed in at 1020g (+60g over claimed 960g)
clamp weighed 23g and looked quite nice
Frame had some minor blemishes under the clearcoat, some joins very visible, small smudge (about 2/3rds of a toothpick in shape) of black paint on the outside of the downtube that mostly scratched off. Otherwise, no complaints. Striking visually with a gorgeous looking weave under what appeared to be a rather thick layer of clearcoat.

fork
PF Nude FRK8 weighed in at 353g (uncut) (-27g under claimed 380g)
Fork looks great. No blemishes, some minor seams visible underneath clearcoat. Steerer tube seems very beefy; mistook it for AL upon taking it out.

carbolock
Shiny silver, no branding visible. Going to look awkward on top of fork steerer, might have to change this out later. Weighs 41g.

FSA Headset
For reference, mine had 7 separate pieces (that includes two paper thin washers). They were loose in a plastic bag and I recommend those who receive theirs immediately twist-tie connect their pieces together. Please let me know if anyone receives more than 7 pieces. The only marking/branding appears on the cartridge bearings and reads "FIRST 1-1/8" 45'X45' FA-40 30.2x41.8x7. From my limited headset knowledge, 45x45 is the correct CE campy standard. Does not appear to match any product shown on FSA's website.

Package was well-packed and nothing was damaged in shipping. I received no tracking number and everything was left at my door for the day. I appear to be missing no parts or items.

Package also contained two frame cable guide adjusters. I also ordered an FD, RD, chain and headset spacers which were all included. I ordered a 25mm carbon headset spacer and that was provided as a 10m/5m/5m/5m set.

aarrgghhh this is almost to much
I go tthe carbolock too but it looks like I would use the CC head and just the lower part instead of the star nut.
Great parts picks though. can't wait to see it done.

Oh- I was reading on the Easton website that my EC90slx comes with an adapter that I am to use instead of the carbolock. Does anyone know if this is true?

I'm disappointed to hear that the frames are so far over the claimed weight. 10-20g would have been acceptable, but 60g???

This was only 11 grams over. There will be variations in weights compared to listed. Thats just how it is. That 60 grams for the 52cm is a 6% variance. Still reasonable to me.

The FSA part, while heavy is perfectly fine for this project, unless you are trying to go weight-weenie. In that case just use the carbolock to set the headset bearing preload tighten the stem in its proper place and substitute something like this:

Token Ultra-Lite fork expander

But I made the right choice. Notice that when you add in the FSA CE headset, it says "FSA Orbit CE Compatible". I knew that was language for generic FSA campy compatible headset and stayed away. Looks like I was right. With the Carbo Bloc, I again knew we were talking about a very generic part here and chose to get the FSA model for $10 when ordering my Cane Creek headset (I'm still surprised that CC doesn't make one of these). None of those expansion/compressors plugs are that light and it weighs 38.8 grams which is about as light as this type gets.

The lightest I've seen is this; looks iffy to me but does say its fine for carbon steerers.

teterider, I have used this expander for over a year with no issues, but do not use it to tighten everything down. I have an FSA expander in my parts drawer and I use it to preload the bearings and tighten down the stem in place. You can then remove the FSA expander and replace it with the one you and I showed and it will work fine. About every other month, when I wash the bike I check for play in the headset/fork and so far I have not had to make any adjustments with the combination.

That expander does not work with carbon and does not work very well with any set up. If you want to go light then just get a TUNE Gum Gum at 10g and pick up a carbon top cap and aluminum bolt and the set up will come in at 15g max.

I have the 3 of those Token expanders and they are crap. The only thing they are good for is the carbon cap and the rest should be thrown away.

Somehow I doubt we'll hear about any frames coming in 60 grams underweight .

On another note, is buying insurance a moot point now? I forgot about it, and didn't really think they'd ship this soon.

onRoffR- When you say 55cm do you mean the L or is it the medium with the 55cm top tube. If both of you are talking about the same frame then it makes sense, however if you aren't then there is either 1) a problem with QC at the factory or 2) serious problems with your scales

I skipped out on the insurance. Odds are that the frame will be fine since they are packed well.

Glad to hear I'm not alone, even if that doesn't do much for me if my frame gets damaged.

Did $17.50 seem high for insurance to anyone else? I seem to remember insuring frames to $1000 for $7 very recently.

If you're looking for a good expander plug, the Token TK287 works better than others I tried. I used one on my RS build.

I use that Token expander on my carbon steerer...works like a charm. Expanders are not exactly rocket science- you just need a firm anchor so the bolt can tighten the headset/spacers/stem together.
The seller of those Token pieces is really solid as well.
