Hey guys, I was recently in a collision on a velodrome and bent my crankset, I also damaged the bottom bracket. I wanted to know if you guys could possibly tell me of a good crank. I have had Omniums and Sugino 75's. I am willing to spend anything below 500 dollars for a crank. Not much more.

Between the omniums and the suguinos, which did you prefer? Why not buy that?

FSA Carbon track are about the worst choice you can make ... avoid avoid avoid. Just in case I'm not being clear enough, AVOID!

Sugino 75/Grand Mighty, Campag Pista, Dura Ace 7400/7600/7700, Omniums

All of them are super and even with a really high end BB (inc ceramics on the Omniums) will run you less than $500. Me personally, I like the DA's and Omniums - but not all frames will take the Omniums and you can't resolve that by say buying a longer BB.

Care to explain? I have them on my track bike (came with the bike) and no complaints so far

Same. I have the earlier version that came stock on my 2008 Fuji Track Pro and can't fault them. I'm only swapping out due to wanting power data...

Why not just go with the "industry standard" Dura Ace 7710 track crankset? They are light, stiff, and pretty much flawless. They provide a nice feel. Some people can't feel the difference and others can.

SRAM Omniums are the best bang for the buck. But, I still prefer the Dura Ace over all others.

EDIT:
And I'd definitely pass on the FSA Carbon Track cranks, too.

Thanks for all the info, guys. Turns out I need a new frame because the top tube has a large lump and I don't think it would be safe to ride it. I am hopefully going to get the dura ace crankset. What bottom bracket would you guys suggest? The dura ace bottom bracket?

You don't have many options for a 109.5mm Octalink. Your options are basically, Shimano 105, Ultegra, or Dura Ace (needle bearing or sealed bearing). Search for Shimano bb-7710 and Shimano bb-7700 to read threads on the difference.

I've personally seen two good road riders buy pre-built bikes that came with FSA carbon. Within 2 full seasons of use, both had failures at the pedal threads. Both used pedal washers. One was a failure in use, in a sprint, that was catastrophic. There are about a million threads on the internet of FSA road cranks doing the exact same thing.

Past that, pretty much invariably carbon is never going to make as stiff a crank as alloy.

That's been published in one form or another plenty. Ultimately on a track bike:

a) Failure is a bad thing
b) Weight is less relevant than on the road and stiffness more relevant

So why put a relatively flexy set of carbon cranks on simply cause they look ok? The FSA might be nice to look at, might be ok on a starter or intermediate bike package. But show me for example a bike pic from any world cup or national event with guys riding them. I've never seen one.

If you do end up going with the FSA crank just make sure you get the later model (the one that someone poster earlier) where the whole spider is carbon, the earlier models had some issues with the crankset loosening up and giving people problems.

But, again, as other people have said, there are better options then the FSA although the FSA isn't a terrible crankset. For example it comes stock on the Sonik. Which isnt the best bike you can buy but its also far from the worst/entry level.

I think the failure that someone was reffering to was in refernce to the older model cranks, as far as i know the newer cranksets dont have this problem. So if you do want to get carbon cranks the FSA isnt a terrible choice, as long as you stay away from the ones that people are known to have trouble with.
