Recently here in Tokyo I saw a beautiful 80's 3 Rensho road bike for sale, it was entirely chrome plated. It was amazing, but unfortunately, it was only 51cm (I ride a 58cm).

Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder. For the record, my 2 least favorite colors for bikes/autos/etc. are black and white. Nothing says "fleet vehicle" like white paint. I like them as contrasting colors, but not the main color. I also don't care for flat or matte finishes. Give me some shine and give me some color. Anything that looks like primer is yuck. Dark blue or dark purple looks so much better than black. Same for pale/light colors and white. The light greenish color on the Engin above looks way better than if it was white. Just my opinion.

Also give me components(stems/seatposts/etc.) that are either shiny silver/chrome or black. I don't need to see those items in colors that are matching the frame color or some exotic color. I just don't. Bar tape and cable housing, whatever works for you. Go for it. Glad I got that off my chest.

There is an old Nissan 300/350ZX in my area with the following paint job:
Murdered out black on one side and green/desert camo on the other. Split right down the middle. Yuck.

Probably copper or cherry (dark red). I also like some hues of navy (dark blue).
For me the no-go are all the pastel colors that seem to be all the rage lately (both the Allied and the Engin posted in this thread are examples), the blue/green turquoise (think Bianchi or Yeti) being the worst offender of them all.

Celeste green; black lettering.

Bianchi has a few 2021 models with silver (or chrome?) lettering, which I am not a fan of. Obviously they should have checked with me beforehand!

A few years ago I built a frame in a local winter class and what took the longest was figuring out the paint. I wanted either a fade or a splatter since Im a product of the late 80s/early 90s and those are still the greatest paint schemes to ever grace this world.
Some options were a candy purple to yellow fade, a green base with red splatter, and glossy red with 5" yellow fade at each of the frame joints.
I ended up with a shimmering orange fading to a cream white.

With customs = you choose.

I've done a few...

Grey with cream panels

Yellow is supposed to be visible

The wife wanted a Big Red Sled with ghosted decals

In an anything i want world, I'm thinking some sort of hideous two-tone with a deep metallic burgundy/maroon color and equally dark purple. In precisely what proportions I'm not sure...some sort of 50/50 fade, or the purple as more of a series of accents.

So many motor vehicles are monochrome (including my last two) I like bikes to be colorful. One of the bikes I looked at last year was bright orange, but it was too small for me, but the one I bought is "Sage Green." (I suspect the hue was inspired but another plant, however). I used to have bright green pedals on it, but one of the bearings went bad, so I replaced them with some in "Electric Blue."

Edit, I didn't answer the question. Anyway, I'd probably go with a classic British Racing Green with yellow accents.

Anything? AG green fading to copper in the back. Sadly my local (only) powdercoater said they can't do fades so I went with the green; I'm contemplating some copper leaf. Add gold accents (incl. fenders) with honey B17 and matching bar tape on the silver handlebar and fat tan wall Rene Herse (since we're fantasizing); yum.

Or, pretty much any color but black, grey, or white. Or fluorescent anything. Even the right shade of orange, and I don't do orange.

Unless you have a very odd Surly with some odd decals on it, I haven't seen anything that was yucky. The old Pacer decals were a change of pace but still look quite decent and their other more common logo has been in use as long as I can remember.

This would probably be my dream paint job or something like it maybe with different colors the intricate details are just mind blowing:
https://festka.com/porcelain-1

However I am just happy with a nice raw titanium frame even one with a little "namby-pamby" blue painted on but I don't hold colors to be weak or strong or any sort of thing like that if it looks good on the bike it looks good on the bike. If it doesn't well if it is my bike I would do something if not I don't really care it ain't my bike.

I tend towards black, gray, and blue, but I've always loved 80s BMX freestyle pastels.

If I wear visible socks (v. rare!) they usually match, I guess.

My 2010 vintage (also black) had the “Fatties fit fine” slogan on it. Not my favorite, but didn’t bug me. I think time has caused it to wear off. Over all, I don’t think it looks anything close to a billboard.

Maybe he was referring to your first BF post, not the OP of this thread.

BTW...How do you wash pots and pans? And yourself?

"Yucky" in this case was more the idea of advertisement on a bike. Or any text really, it's just not my cup of tea. That said, the Surly lettering is particularly ugly, imo.

I was talking about shirts rather than bikes. Yes, shirts also don't look like billboards .

And sometimes it is about so much more than paint or decals

Or maybe the decals make it pop

And many drool over lug and or tube lining, hand painted of course.

Shoes to compliment your frame = the icing on the cake.
