Chain keeps coming off crank gear at high gears

If I pedal too hard it comes off. And always on the outside.

It doesn't stay in low gears either. It'll immediately slip from 1st to 3rd and then wander up to 5th. It will stay in 6th and 7th but now I can't use them because if I pedal hard the chain slips.

I removed the chain guard and disconnected gear cable. When I rotate the pedal backwards the lower pully wheel clicks and it stays in 6th gear (2nd smallest cog). I have to push the derailleur in towards the wheel to make the chain rotate smooth

When I pull the derailleur away from the wheel to get the chain onto the highest gear it slips off the front chain ring like this.

How many miles on the chain. It doesn't sit in the chainring. Worn out chain. Clean bike. Adjust deraileur.

I'm betting on the BB being shot as well as the chain. You shouldn't have 'play' in the crank.

Fortunately one-piece cranks are quite serviceable with minimal tools. The Park Tool website has good instructions. Best bet is to open it up and make sure the pieces are in good condition, and if they are, reassemble with proper lube and adjustment. Since the chain is shot anyway, it has to be replaced, and then you can re-evaluate from there.

I'm gonna take my other bike to go see a guy selling a chain and then the bike shop to see chain tools.

I pulied this carrier off one of my dumpster bikes are the mounting brackets too close to the brake? I don't have a backpack need a milk crate to bring my tools and stuff.

You can get a new chain for under 20.00.

Sram comes to mind.

Good Luck and stay safe

I would not advise this if you have the means to replace the chain, but if cash is short, this can be a decent temporary fix.

And I would hope that was Canadian dollars. I find them all the time for around $10.US.

Looks like from here you have plenty of clearance.

Thanks, I'd like to try that. I got a Parktool CT-5 chain tool but it's still in the package. Will that be able to do what you describe? Also if I want to remove a link do I need to buy new rivets? I saw some videos where they were breaking off the ends of the rivets after pressing them in.

The rivets that you have to break off are largely obsolete. Most chains now come with a detachable master link. In fact, replacing that broken link with a master link of the correct width would probably get you back on the road once the other issues are corrected as well. If you do try to press the chain back together, you'll probably want to carry a master link and the chain tool with you, or invest in some good walking shoes.

So I screwed up and pushed the rivet out completely when removing a piece of chain and was unable to reassemble it.

After watching a bike man video I removed another section of chain but this time I left the rivet on there enough that I was able to push it back in. I just tested the bike and it does ride much better and stays in the lower gear it no longer slips into higher gears and chain doesn't fly off even when I pedal really hard.

I took some pictures to show how the bike chain sits in high and low gear.
