Odd 3 speed Hub

A Add on CL for Schwinn 3 speed showed this Rear wheel and hub. The shifting cable is on the break side. I have not seen this before Were they made that way or is this a mod.

Anyone have any idea;s on it

Shimano 333. Some of the coasterbrake versions had the bellcrank on the non-drive side.

Shimano put the shift mechanism on the non-drive side on some of their coaster hubs. Probably a 3CC.

Thanks for the info. Know I know what it is I looked it up and the general opinion is to stay away from them.
Thanks Ed

Yes, they were not durable, and there are no parts available. They might be the worst 3-speed hub ever made.

All Shimano 333 hubs were bad? I rode the heck out of my Sears three speed so equipped back in the early '70s. I preferred it to my dad's ~1960 Sears 'JC Higgins' three speed with the S-A hub. The Shimano was easier to adjust properly - and if the S-A was off a bit, it had the nasty tendency to slip into 'neutral' between 2nd and 3rd under load... and I broke lots of S-A adjusting chains when I'd drop the bike on the drive side...

Only if it's ridden in hilly areas' on flat land they last forever. I have worked on tons of 333 hubs and have 3 nos coaster models in my bins. The one thing I like about the Shimano 3 speeds is the bell crank design.

The Sturmey-Archer TCW series might be worse. They actuate the coaster brake through the internal gear mechanism, so when you're in high gear (and going fastest), you have the least mechanical advantage when braking.
