Student Bike give-away project
So, I teach at an inner city, high poverty school in a community that sturggles mightily at the best of times, but really is taking a hit. We are a title one school with 90% poverty, and around a 88/10/2 student demographic (AA/L/W). I built up a bike (below) for a student who had his stolen and is struggling this year. My fellow Social Studies teachers (my work wives) and I thought it might be cool to use my addiction to good use, and so we will be trying to motivate students through bike give-aways throughout the virtual year to get them motivated.
Firstly, not asking for kudos or donations, but advice throughout. I might sell some stuff in CV sales to raise funds to get it going.
I will be custom painting a few bikes for Breast cancer awareness, a school colors bike (Blue/gold "cougar"), and a Black History month bike! Might even do a few others.
Questions:
1. Where do you hawk-eyed folks find your "Saved from the dump" bikes. I have bought around 8, but getting some freebies can help. I am sure friends of my work wives will donate some?
2. What are the better, CHEAP sources for:
a. Cables
b. brake shoes
c. Tires (brands, shops)

I have seen people put adds on Craigslist list with similar requests for charitable cause. I would think that could help getting you to the goals that you seek. In my local we have some coops and a nonprofit that would serve a plenty of scrapper types of crust and rusted that has to go, see if there those around.

the best deals i find on things like cables, housings, brake pads, tubes, etc are on ebay in bulk offerings. for what i last paid at a bike shop/full retail for a set of cables/housings, i could have gotten atleast three times the same parts on ebay. now, i like supporting local business, so i do when i can. but, in your situation, ebay is where i'd go. otoh, since you're a charitable endeavor, perhaps a local shop or three would be generous enough to support your efforts at or near cost. "solicit" them maybe on back/overstock/end of the year inventory, too. i work next door to a sporting goods retailer and one time i found a box full of tubes and other little bits in the shared dumpster
as for complete'ish bikes, my best finds have been thrift stores, yard sales, and occasionally flea markets. something like craigslist (in my area, anyway), could be a big grab bag for a situation like yours. if a person isn't offering something two or three times what a bike is really worth (because it's "vintage"), then it's generally an item not even worth time. relatively speaking, of course

I'm a mechanic for a local charity bike shop associated with a community farm project. After 15 hours of "sweat equity" you can get a refurbished bike, gratis. The people we serve include homeless, chronically unemployed, recently released from jail, lost driver's license due to DUI, and community service youth groups. All our bikes are donated. Bike shops give us "trade-in" used bikes or refer people to drop off their old bikes at our bike donation "corral." We have also used a bike donation drive associated with Earth Day in April with great success.
I'd suggest contacting local bike shops to let them know about your project. Many shops take used bikes in trade for a new bike just to make the sale, with no real intent to re-sell the trade-in. They can also refer people to your project directly. If you are incorporated as a non-profit charity, you can offer receipts for tax purposes. Bike shops can also supply consumables like chains, brake pads, cables and housings, tires and tubes at reduced cost, and other useful items like repair stands, tools, and such.

Any suggestions on cheap tires, cables and pads? Canti-lever pads I have yet to find a decent-priced bulk sale on ebay.
The cables I think are pretty reasonable for some ebay sellers.

Non profit status will help a lot in soliciting donations from shops and suppliers. You don't have to go through the whole non-profit process yourself. Try to affiliate with a local nonprofit; a group that supports the local schools, a food bank, a community land trust, or a church are all possibilities.
There are two REI stores in S. Carolina: I'd suggest contacting them as well as the larger bike shops in your area.

I stop by a township trash compactor site once a week on my way home from work. The guy that runs it sets bikes and a lot of other things that are brought in to sell, I have got a few bike shop bikes from him most need a little work but cost 3 to 5.00. Also if there is a place that buys scrap metal ask if you can look around for bikes.

solid idea, there! i ran into a fellow at a fhrift store and got into a convo about his norco mtb. turns out he'd found it at the local metal yard. that and, at one point, a cannondale road bike. one of those all black ones...whatever they're called. anyway, he said he frequently sees very decent bikes there during high volume (scrapping) season

Perhaps you could reach out to your Board of Education and ask that they submit a press release asking for unwanted bikes. It might generate more attention than just one person asking for freebies.

my wife and i have an animal sanctuary (501c-3) and used to get walmart donations once/twice a week from one of the supercenters. when that fell through, we went bi-monthly to the return center. in both cases, they threw away all kinds of stuff besides pet food/care products. we got in quite friendly with the claims dept managers at that SC ( lives less than ten miles from us, too). however, you'll probably have to go directly to a general manager to inquire.

Been doing this sort of thing for years. When our group started, we invited the kids to work with us, learning how to work on bikes and earning one at the same time. Lots and lots of bikes found new homes this way. The group? Bicycles for Humanity - Thunder Bay Chapter and we also sold bikes, two times a year, at the Lakehead University Bicycle Sales...

@jdawginsc, good for you with this program. I facilitate an "earn-a-bike" program in the school district where I work, and I can tell you the kids who participate really love learning to ride and wrench. Our program is done through a bicycle advocacy group, BikeWalkKC, who works within the community to make walking and biking better for everyone. They do education programs for all ages; I've been urging some of my like-minded teachers to bring the program into their schools. Basically, kids participate in a nine week after school program where they tear apart a bike down to the nuts and bolts, then put it back together and tune it. They learn street safety and the laws of riding, and practice bike skills in our parking lot. They learn to plan routes. And three or four weeks in, we begin to ride. Each week is progressively longer as kids grow stronger. Last year, a group of bike cops began to join us, which is actually pretty cool. Upon completing the nine weeks, the kids keep the bike they've built and have been riding.
I can't really offer much advice about getting bikes. BikeWalkKC already has a very substantial donor plan in place, so I'd suggest considering a collaboration with a similar organization or coop. After doing this for a couple years, by the way, the word gets around and people just start giving me bikes for the program. Covid forced us to put things on pause this Fall, so I've actually found myself bike rich for (hopefully) the spring program. Best wishes! It's a worthy endeavor, and there's a special place in my heart to see a skinny 13 year old blow past a group of bike cops climbing a hill!

I sometimes find it cheaper to buy brakes vs brake pads. I've picked up bulk tektro v-brakes for 3-6.00 a pair which is less then the pads and of course they come with new pads, noodles, and dust boots. It's also helped me switch some bikes to V from canti when I've had spare levers from a scrapped wal-mart special.
Canti pads are harder to find cheap.
Your cables look like good bargains, there's a couple sellers that sell jagwire housing on ebay in larger rolls. I tend to buy these since the Jagwire is as good as any, the price is as good as any other and the kids like having options.
