Any info on thrift store find - taiwan made diamondback assault?

I found this at a thrift store today. Iy looks almost unusd - even the tires still have hair on them.

Can anyone tell me anything about it - like what year?

It has 2 different brake types; dia-compe in back & the front ones say Odyssey 1999 BMX - is this normal from the factory? Is this a 1999 bike?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks -
is it suppose to have 2 different types of brakes? Is it a 1999 or is that part of brake name?

Yeah I think the two different brakes was becoming a BNX thing in the early ‘90s.

The front brake would have been added on at a later point. Judging by the cantilever brakes on the bake and the threaded (1") headset the bike is probably from the mid 90s. The '1999' on the Odyssey brake is simply a model of brake that Odyssey sells. By the late 90s most of the lower-mid range bmx bikes would be made in China (earlier would have a mixture of Taiwan and China). Possibly a 1995 by a quick look online: https://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/diamond_back/81916

It couldn't have the same brake front & rear as there are no cantilever mounting posts in front.

1995 DB Assault. Not super collectable, but still a cool thrift store find.

I would have placed this circa 1996-1997, as I believe it was still Diamond Back (i.e. two words) in 1995. At least it was on the ATB and road models. The serial number may allow us to determine the exact manufacture date.

As for the brakes, I'm leaning heavily to the front being an aftermarket upgrade based on the mismatched brake levers. One is black, while the other is silver. I strongly doubt that it would have been issued like that from the factory.
