Dumb question that I've been meaning to resolve for a while:

are these the same as Eng/ISO headsets *except* for the tops bits that screw onto the steerer? ie. do french frames share same press-fit and crown-race diameters?

I am 99% sure that they do. Also Italian. It's jut the threaded bits that differ.

It's close. The outer diameter is 30.2 for French and Italian and 30.0 for English. Sutherlands has the info and the Sheldon Brown site likely has it as well. But yeah I think it's basically interchangeable except for the threaded bits and even there obviously you can install an english threaded HS on an Italian bike but likely not a good idea to go back and forth.

I've never measured my French headsets, but according to Sheldon Brown, they are different sizes, the crown race on a French bike being slightly larger. You could probably make English crown race work with a bit of careful filing/sanding, but a French race may be a little loose on a non-French fork.

https://www.sheldonbrown.com/velos.html

English threads: 1" x 24 tpi (25.4 x 1.058 mm)
English/ISO headset crown race: 26.4 mm (J.I.S. 27 mm)
English/ISO Headset-head tube 30.2mm (J.I.S. 30 mm)

French threads: 25.0 mm x 1.0 mm
French headset crown race: 26.5 mm (sometimes 27.0 mm)
French headset-head tube: 30.2

AFAIK, the only difference between the French thread Campagnolo headsets and the English/Italian ones is the threaded parts. The crown races are all 26.4mm, the pressed races 30.2mm. The go/no-go tools for assessing crown race and head tube only give "passa" for 26.4mm crown race seat and 30.2mm head tube ID. Campagnolo catalog 17 does say that the pressed races could be special ordered 0.5mm oversize and crown race "smaller diameter available" but doesn't state how much smaller.

I don't know how to tell the Record HS apart from the Gran Sport but the GS has a low stack height. GS has a stack height of 34 mm; the Record 39. The GS is a good one for a short steerer.

I just sorted a full drawer of Campy headset parts that, maybe not surprisingly, didn't yield a single full useable headset. Durn fork crown races either missing or pitted.

Anyway, from all my digging today, it looks like the Gran Sport headset top threaded race only has two wrench flats, while the Record has the more often seen multiple flats. 5? 6?

In addition, due to the lower stack height I suppose, the drawings I've seen of the Gran Sport don't have all the logo stamping in the upper threaded race and the lower head tube pressed race. Looks like those sections of the race/cup are shallower, so not enough room to do the stamping.

Though I do have a French-threaded upper threaded race with only two wrench flats, but also all the stampings. No idea what the heck that's about.

So if all of that's accurate, hazetguy's HS here is definitely Record.
