Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rural Cycling: Pesticide Sprayers

The UK farmers use pesticides which have mostly been banned in the rest of the EU due to danger to health...

I tend to either turn around if i see one cos im paranoid of the vapours.

It really peeves me off that they spray in windy conditions.

what do you do? what would you do if you were in the same scenario?

I meant to say. I don't think you should worry about it too much. Really you should just ride right by them and take deep breaths. I'm sure you are worrying about nothing and these deep breaths will help put you at ease.

Dial it up to 400W and hold your breath. Works for dead sheep carcasses too.

A bigger problem is the dairy farms where they spray the runoff from the milking sheds back onto the paddocks. Ugh.

I passed by a water treatment plant the other day where they were pumping sludge into a holding pond. It was windy and I got a little spray. Held lips tight and held my breath, but yuck!

They spray for skeeters here, which I'm thankful for. Luckily I can also be thankful that I've never encountered a spray rig on the bike.

The good news is that if you don't do anything, you wont reproduce and that would be a good thing... for humanity

ps: have you ever tried to use cycling to get closer to your family?

My uncle used to go jogging right after the pesticide trucks sprayed. As a teen, he liked it because of the "sweet" smell.

The cancer was too widespread and varied to treat. All the doctors could do was focus on easing his pain.

There is no other history in my family of cancer, and the doctors considered those pesticides to be causal.

I'd try to keep that spray off you, but most of the time it's just irrigation and not a big deal.

Open your mouth as you ride through the mist. Come back and tell us what it tastes like and we'll try to figure out if it's dangerous.

Don't swallow.

i thought you were supposed to roll up to the valve tank and top up your tires with some spray, that way when you get your next flat you won't need to deal with the bugs while you fix it.

Getting sprayed with "reclaimed water" a.k.a. sewage is a constant problem out here as many fields are irrigated with high pressure jets blasting this stuff into the air with high winds. Smoke from field burning and various chemicals is just a reality of riding in agricultural areas.

This means that my body and lungs are occasionally subjected to unpleasant crap. But that won't keep me from riding.

I like opening these threads by this particular OP. I cannot agree with anything he/she/it says and do not find it intellectually stimulating in any way, but now it is more like looking at a car wreck... you just can't stop!

Reminds me of riding behind those mosquito sprayers back in my youth. Those were good times.

We used to do the same. I loved the smell of the smoke billowing out from the back of the jeep and we'd run right into it.

My dad used to break thermometers as a kid because he liked playing with mercury in his palm.

It is not a joke. Thank you for your sympathy...it was a very long time ago.

I personally feel that those pesticide trucks are kind of a big deal. Notice that they don't do them in the middle of the day when most people are out and about. My uncle was a very early morning jogger.
