Not many companies make shoes specifically for flat pedals. I see that 5 10 makes a number of them.
I know some cyclists like to use skateboard shoes. Is it because the compound on the outer sole is stickier?
I use northface hiking sneakers and they are pretty good, but I could use a higher level of grip.
thanks

I like my hiking sneakers for riding with platform pedals and I've never had an issue with lack of grip. I've thought about buying a different shoe but I'm hesitant to buy a pair of shoes just for commuting. Not saying it's a bad idea, though; I'm curious whether others think that these are better shoes for flat pedals as well.

Back in '02 Nashbar had a clearance on some Wellgo skate/bike shoes for $15, I bought IIRC at least 6 pair. I'm down to my last nice pair and one raggedy pair. Not only are they great for platform pedals, they look pretty decent too. The soles are a dual compound with the pedal contact area being a stiffer material. My only regret is not calling Nashbar to find out how many in my size they had in stock and buying them all.

I just bought a pair of Skechers Vigor 2.0 with memory foam and love them on the bike. I bought my bike with just cheap plastic flat pedals planning on upgrading to better pedals. But since I got these shoes I like them so much with the cheap pedals I am sticking with the combo until they have problems.

If you're going to get special shoes to ride your bike, why not get bike shoes? If you want shoes that are comfortable to walk in off the bike, get pedals that provide support and use your comfortable street shoes.

I do want bike shoes only the bike shoes I want are for platform pedals. this has nothing to do with walking while off the bike. It has everything to do with me not wanting to ride attached to my bike. I have looked into clipless riding and made my decision to do without this feature. Hence the post.

I would be interested to know what other folks think of five ten Freeriders. I have been using a pair of low cut hiking shoes with lug soles and they work pretty well but I'm always looking for something better.

1) To understand the question, you have to understand the greatness of flat pedals.
2) I've tried only Five Tens, and the model I have is great (2013 Minaars). I have DMR V12 pedals with metal studs, and I feel attached to the pedals. It's just that detaching requires a small upward motion of the feet, not some magical twisting. Walking is less than great, as expected with stiff soles.
3) Other brands that make flat pedal shoes include Chrome & DZR. Their soles look like they'd be as effective as FiveTens.

The shoes are about as special as a stiffer sole and more durable construction.

thanks for the heads up on the chrome shoes. Very handsome and no doubt will do the job. I did however place an amazon order for the freeriders. It was an easy decision as the chromes weren't available in my size. I appreciated having a second option to check out. thanks to all for the feedback

I've been riding with Etnies Jameson Eco 2 but they're not waterproof. I'll probably upgrade to one of the Chrome Storms (Kursk or Truk).

I have 5 10's and they are fine in the summer. If you live in a non rainy state, they may be fine. They are warm enough, but not dry at all. And there is zero arch support.
My husband found some Shimano's that are weatherproof spds that will also work on flats. He was bone dry in a major rainstorm last week. I'm not sure how sticky they are, but I would investigate.
