Which components?

I'm a newby who has just bought an old crome molly Trek 820 a little small for me. I have put about 200 miles on the bike so far. It's been enough to get me hooked. I'll soon be buying a better bike but I'm stumped on all the different models and components. Every time I look at youtube on reviews of the best bikes, they are always recommending a bike I have never heard of and can't even order. From my limited experience,it would seem better to look at specs and pick in that way,at least narrow it down to the test ride possibilities.

The problem is that as a newby,I have no idea of the levels of quality of components. Where can a newby learn what's good kit and components, and what's junk without spending a year reading comments?

Will you be buying new from a shop? What do you hope to gain from buying a new bike? Are you after lighter weight? A better fit? The fun of having something new? A good salesperson can use those questions to help you hone on a suitable new model.

I agree, as new rider, get some ideas at a LBS (local bike shop) and buy local
What pricepoint are you looking at?
