On Facebook, I just saw a video of Denise going 103 mph (low speed test) on the bike. Totally and completely ridiculous and amazing. There are no words to describe it.

Zirbel sets new US Hour Record set in Aguascaliente, Mexico 53.037km Zirbel sets new US Hour Record | Cyclingnews.com
"At the halfway point, Zirbel was pedaling at an average pace of 52.7km/h, remaining consistent with 16.9 seconds a lap. As the event progressed, he sped up and was pushing lap times as fast at 16.6 seconds for the last five minutes, bringing him close to the 53km/h mark and enough to secure the record."
Riding in the ERO optimized aero position with everything tricked out, I require 545 watts to do 16.9 second laps (at sea level). If I could do a 4k team pursuit (with 3 other men) at 16.9 second lap times (33.1 mph), I would be a rockstar and one of the most sought after team pursuit partners by ALL age groups.
Zirbel and Wiggins must have some very special blood running through their veins and muscle architecture and composition that would make a great ape say "dude".

Book Review: "This Island Race"
For the TT enthusiasts (you know who you are) interested in the history of the TT in it's natural environment I recommend reading:
"This Island Race: Inside 135 Years of British Bike-Racing" by Les Woodland published in 2005.
The unique political, cultural and downright British adoption of the TT as the accepted form of cycling competition is detailed in a conversational style by long time cycling journalist Woodland.
"Secret" TT races as the Norm?
Dressing head-to-toe in Black kit?
Lands End to John O Groats and 24 hour record attempts on Fixed Gears?
It's got it all for the devotee of the Home of Real TT Madness with Reg Harris, Tom Simpson & Beryl Burrton to boot as Woodland says to make "A Race Apart".

One of the guides I was riding with in Scotland races mostly mountain bike but some road stuff. We had a bit of a miscommunication when I referred to a "longer" TT. Which she took to mean 100 miles whereas I was talking 40K, lol.
She BTW is preparing for an endurance MTB race called the Strathpuffer. It's as many laps as you can do of a 7ish mile/1000 ft elevation gain course. You have 24 hours. It takes place in the Highlands in January. Her husband did it and wound up riding 40 laps. Which is 275 MTB miles and 40k feet of elevation gain by my calculation. Totally bad ass, in a little bit of a nutso way!

"So, what's yer 50 time then?"
"50 What?"
This was my introduction to learning how to swear properly in Cymraeg, although my accent is still deplorable despite much practice over the years.
Mr. Jones has one indomitable pace up/over/down hill and an ability to ignore any and all weather conditions but lacked the comprehension of what an Echelon was for much less a Sprint.
This may be genetic, cultural or just sheer bloody minded-ness most likely.

When I saw the "Island" race I defaulted to Mann.
Old programming dies hard.
Such an interesting morph. The UK is a small and reasonably dense place and defaulted to timed distance events. The US has miles of endless miles and default to criteriums as the race of choice.
Beryl falls into the same cult status as Major Taylor. Two incredibly under appreciated/acknowledged people. I would hope that both get their due.

Liverwurst. A must. Also, Carnegie Diner is closing their doors forever soon. Just a hint!

Apparently I picked up a bug on the flight up here. I felt super tired and achy yesterday afternoon and went to bed as soon as the crowd left. Sweating and chills last night. I went to an urgent care place this morning and found I had an upper respiratory infection. I ended up with an antihistamine and instructions to rest and drink lots of fluids. Just got up from a two hour nap and ate leftover corned beef and roast beef sandwiches. Can't let them go to waste! I'm feeling better, hope that continues.

Sick on vacation! That blows.
Feel better, I suggest matzo ball soup. Send someone out to the deli to pick some up. They might as well get you a knish while they're there.
