Riding the ARBT Single Track. You can't get here on a road bike.
Out for a short ride, quasi-recovery, so I grabbed the gravel bike and hit the American River Bicycle Trail, but went off on some of the side path single track.
Down by the river, cutting through the trees, you can't get here on a road bike! Can you believe this is in the middle of a city?
Parallel paths paved and dirt track, but a world apart
Off into the trees!
Yellow Star Thistle. Not as bad as Goat Head, but it will ruin your day, and it is everywhere!
Some nice little whoopties.
Sunset. I should head home soon. There is a meteor shower tonight!

I've got family up near Sacto. I always wondered what kind of riding was available. I live in SoCal right at the base of the mountains, so it's pretty much climbing for me, all the time. Some days I'd kill for some extended smooth rolling flow like that without any gut-busters. I'll have to bring my gravel rig up there next time.

My favorite ARBT dirt section is between the hatchery and downtown Folsom. From downtown up to Beals on the dirt is fun too.

Oh, and the cobble. The whole area that is not packed sand/clay mix is tailings piles left over from the Gold Rush, or fist sized cobbles.... several layers deep. They shift like you would not believe.
I will take some pictures of the washouts and sand pits next time I am out.
Here is the sort of cobble you run into. The trail will just fade out into this. That dirt is only a few inches thick, the river rising significantly will wash it right out and the cobble is exposed.

There are some great trails along the ARBT but be careful, the majority of those trails are not legal to ride. A group of us worked hard to open up the section by Woodlake as demonstration area. We regularly ride these trails and others on Sunday mornings. Drop me a line if you want to join?
