Cherubim Bicycles introduces a tandem

Cherubim is a Japanese bicycle maker founded by Hitoshi Konno in 1965, and now led by his son Shin-ichi Konno. Cherubim's visually stunning bikes regularly win awards at the North American Handmade Bike Show, including President’s Choice, Best Track Frame, President’s Award for Excellence, and in 2013 Best City Bike for the Cherubim Rambler.

Cherubim has just introduced a tandem. In the US, Cherubim is available at Fairwheel Bicycles.

I don't get it. Cherubim makes a couple incredible looking singles (Hummingbird and Air Line), then this 90's looking "aero" (not) tandem? What's with that?!

More impressive, here's a woody for you: https://sojournercyclery.com/2012/11/...-in-wood-2012/

Eclectic comes to mind. Big swoopy fillets, sparkly paint, but a strange mix of very narrow, swoopy rear stays and straight bladed bike fork on a frame that's otherwise using "classic" geometry with short stoker compartment, marathon-like stays, a very small diameter downtube and pinch bolt bottom bracket.

Hi TG, what are the drawbacks to the pinchbolt BB? That's what my new-to-me Litespeed Ti has, and I haven't had any issues with it. Thx.

In case anyone wonders about the crankset, it is a square taper Stronglight Z'Light Tandem, that'll set you back $92.

It works just fine, but it's the least streamlined-looking of all the eccentric designs and seems out of place vs. the big fillets and other styling cues. Again, the frame is a bit of an eclectic collection of styles and shapes that just don't seem to work together.

That said, I personally prefer the internally expanding eccentrics like the Bushnell/daVinci and Co-Motion's four-cam lobe design. It seems like a shame to put a split in one of the highly stressed parts of a tandem frame and then tack-weld four large bosses to support two big bolts when there are more elegant solutions. Again, split shells work just fine, but I don't understand why they're still used other than eliminating the cost of a patented eccentric.

Not going to get fenders on that bike with those rear seat stays and wheel clearance....that's for sure.

Pretty bike but I like mine a bit more versatile.

Both tandems are a combination of art and old and new technology.

Ah, good pick up. $92 is too good to be true, as the chainrings alone are worth more than that. I find that XX Cycles website bewildering. But, that is where Stronglight is available (as well as TA chainrings), and that is all good stuff. I purchased TA chainrings from XX Cycles, it shipped immediately, and arrived in about 18 days.

Anyway, if actually ordering a tandem crankset from XX Cycles, I think the bill would look like this. I am not quite sure which would be the correct square taper bottom bracket, though. I aver that is a pretty good price.

I purchased my TA chain rings from Sheldon Brown's old shop, Harris Cyclery in West Newton, MA USA. They spend some money to keep them in stock, shipped fast and I got them in a couple days.
