Sunday - To Work, Back Home
Monday - To Work, Back Home
Tuesday - To Work, Grocery, Home
Wednesday - To Work, Home
Thursday - To Work, Home
Friday & Saturday - SKATE!

Since I gave up recreational cycling my report is quite short. Skating is usually some loop up to 20 miles mostly on bike paths and rail-trails. Cooler months I might do a 50 mile skate. Bikes are strictly for utility transport now including doctor, dentist, work, and food related rides.

So .... what day is it...?

THURSDAY! - Bike to work, then back home. total of about 7 miles. God willing.

Allergist to work today + a walk at lunch on the hunt for a very small handbag with a strap.

All winter long, I've had everything I need in my winter coat pockets but spring is here now and I'm getting really tired of wearing my winter coat all the time, so I need to be able to carry the basics a different way.

On holidays today and decided to visit a new bank branch. They closed an old branch where I had a fairly dormant account and a safety deposit box which I thought was empty, and merged it with another branch. I also hadn't activated a new bank card within a few months of receiving it, and had to get it activated on site, so I went there to check it out the safety deposit box (yep, empty - I might close that sucker) and activate the bank card.

4.25 km round trip by foot.

My place of employment has joined a steps challenge and I joined one of the teams! Got my pedometer today and the challenge begins tomorrow.

I'll have to set up the pedometer tonight.

I've never actually tracked steps before so it will be interesting to see how many actual steps I take throughout a day.

Today I got off the bus early and walked. because the traffic was completely jammed because protesters had taken over the biggest bridge. The police eventually moved them on but I was at work by then ... only about 45 minutes late.

Then I walked to and from my chiropractor at lunch.

And this evening, Rowan and I walked to the beach and back.

And this, if you can read it, is a "bus stop". It's a Walking School Bus.

If you've never heard of a Walking School Bus, this page talks about it:
City of Hobart | Walking Bus

So today was my first day of the steps challenge and my first day of wearing a pedometer all day. According to my Google mapping I walked 7.2 km today. According to my pedometer, I walked about 10 km!!

Wow, pretty weird walk today. I walked along the river in the ritzier part of town.

First, I saw an eight man crew take down a huge tree. the cross section of that tree trunk was taller than the men taking it down! They were using two big cranes to take it wown. One of the guys told me they were removing it because it was dead. It made me sad to see such a beautiful old tree come down.

Two minutes later I watched another eight man crew. This one was rowing a boat, like those boats you see in the Olympics. They were fast! This crew made me happy. Human power!

Right after that, I got bit by a dog. This lady had her dogs improperly leashed, and they went after me. The little pug in front bit me on my calf. The lady started yelling at her dogs. I told her it was her own fault, so she really should be yelling at herself.

All of that happened in about 15 minutes. The rest of my three hour walk was uneventful and relaxing. It was probably the last day over 70 degrees for the next six months. If I hadn't been wearing shorts, the dog probably wouldn't have been able to bite me.

That is one of the reasons I like walking ... you get to see lots of stuff. The dog bite isn't good, however. Did you have to get treated for it?

Yesterday, I ended up walking 8 km. Rowan and I went hiking up a local trail, then I walked around the block, and then we walked down to the beach and back.

No, I didn't get treatment for the dog bite. The skin was not penetrated. Yes, I like to see lots of stuff and I have fun riding or walking because I can be an active participant in some of that stuff. That's hard to do in a car.

A Gower Journey....

My wife and I live in Wales. A few weeks ago we decided to ride our new bikes from our village in "Pembrey" to a tiny place the other side of Crofty, across the Gower. From Pembrey harbour you can look across the bay and the sun at times shines over the rooftops of the houses there. So we didn't think it would be too difficult a journey. We have today what is called the Millennium Coastal Path. Money was found in the year 2000 for a cycle path to be built. And over the years more money was found to extend on the first part of the cycle network. This was the link to all towns along our coastline. Well, I put my trust in Google maps. I asked Google, how far is it from Pembrey to my destination? It replied 14 miles!! Ha! We picked a day and it turned out to be the perfect day for such a casual ride. We packed some sandwiches and a flask of tea. And at 10'O'Clock on a Friday morning we set off. I rode my new Surly Big Dummy and my wife rode her new Dawes town bicycle. We rode the coastline! But most of the journey was through woodlands that made us feel we were a million miles from home. We rarely saw the sea. And what we thought was fourteen miles turned into 30 one way. The path doesn't go in a straight line. We passed dozens of cyclists and many walkers, and everyone greeted us warmly. There is something about cycling and indeed woodlands that relaxes people. Tensions disappear. People are thoughtful. People find time for each other. That is why we don't have a car. We haven't driven for over twenty years. We are both 64. Cycling keeps us young and in touch with young people. We've decided for our next journey, we'll ride to Mumbles. Mumbles I believe overlooks the Bristol channel.... Thanks for reading....

New puppy, so several short walks around the neighbourhood Saturday and Sunday. Today I am at an out of town gig and walked to work along the Sault Ste. Marie Hub Trail.

Yesterday, rec. ride -- approx. 50kms along our riverside MUP system. I gave in to the urge to maintain speed through the piles of leaves; escaped unscathed.

Today: in to work, making a short loop downtown then up to my office at the uni just to get in a few extra kms. Mornings like this -- clear skies; about -3C -- in late Fall are pretty much my favourite time to ride. Tonight I'll ride home, extending the ride with a quick out 'n back along a branch of the river, picking up tonight's wine along the way.

I joined a Step Challenge at my place of employment and we're about a week from the finish now. Through the Step Challenge, I discovered that I walk about 10,000 steps a day quite naturally, but I've been doing a bit of an extra push so that I've been averaging about 13,000 steps a day during this challenge which started mid-October. It has been motivating.

October was an incredibly busy month ... dealing with illness, travelling 4 weekends out of the 5, attempting a 600K randonnee (completed 390 km of it), finishing my course, and writing my final exam. Unless something very strange happens, I will graduate with a Graduate Certificate in IT in December. Hoping for a bit more sleep in the next week or two. There hasn't been much sleep lately.

Meanwhile ...

Saturday - Rowan and I decided to check out some of the buildings on offer in the Open House Hobart event:
Open House Hobart About Open House Hobart | Open House Hobart

We were thinking of cycling between buildings as we did a couple years ago, but the weather is so bad this year, that we opted to walk instead. It was chilly and very windy with numerous rain squalls. But we did get to see several places.

And I ended up with 13,000 steps on our little adventure.

View of Hobart

The tall boat we explored ...

(click photos for more!)

Sunday -- We cycled the Ranelagh Ramble Randonnee. It is the first ride of the season and described as, "A lovely amble around some of the more delightful roads that the Huon Valley has to offer. Some gravel, a few hills and a bakery to begin and end the ride."

"They" also threw wind, rain, and a range of temperatures into the mix.

Distance: 98.4 km
Elevation: 1080 metres
Moving time: 5 hours 26 minutes 47 seconds ... 18.1 km/h average speed.
Elapsed time: 5 hours 51 minutes 42 seconds

https://www.bikeforums.net/road-cycli...nov-5-6-a.html

I'll also add that I ended up walking 45.9 km last week.

Pedaled my Dahon Speed 8 to the Trek dealer's showroom/workshop on the other side of our neighborhood to get a replacement for a missing brake arm adjustment screw. No dice. Doubling back home, it occurred to me that I probably should check with our Egyptian plumber, who always keeps a cache of miscellaneous fasteners handy; he helpfully secured me a couple of near-exact matches (a couple of mms shorter than the original, but it still has plenty of range to adjust in and out.) No more of that tffffffffft tffffffffft tffffffffft as I roll around!

Walking back to my hotel in Sault Ste Marie last night, pretty sure a coyote ran across my path. It was dark and I just caught a quick glimpse beyond some long grass, so I'm not 100% sure - maybe a very large fox.
This morning I remembered too late that I had to be to work at 830 instead of 9, so I took the 'free' hotel shuttle, but I will walk back.

Walked back to my hotel along the Sault Ste. Marie Hub Trail last evening. Unfortunately, the part I use is mostly just paved shoulder along a suburban road - not very scenic. No notable wildlife this time.

Friday, 101.48 miles. The cold reduces my power and endurance. It surprised me a little this year.
