It wouldn't be July in the Berkeley hills without breezy, overcast, somewhat chilly weather . . . and goats. Nature's little lawnmowers, gainfully employed every summer decreasing fire fuel. They are moved from place to place until there is precious little dry grass on the ridge top left to burn.

It's fun to see them, and when they are out, I'm not the only one up there that smells like a goat.

They’re getting smarter about using goats along highways too, especially hilly areas with heavy vegetation. 👍 I guess they use portable fences, to keep everygoat in line. 🙂

Here’s another dangerous herd of wild turkeys. 😁😉 I see a lot more turkeys & deer here around Sacramento, than I’ve seen anywhere. Just last night, I saw 7 more deer, as it was getting dark, and got a sense there were plenty more around, I couldn’t see.

And they really do just stop & stare at people, in cars, or walking or whatever. It’s like they’re hypnotized or something. I was walking around a corner towards the bathroom, and saw 4 at once, in a small field, walking towards the river. They ALL just froze there, and stared at me a bit. And I guess I did the same thing, lol, so not bad-mouthin’ any deer. 🙄😁😉

It's been looking a bit rough for years, and it seems that the owner is either tearing it down or scavenging the boards for some other projects. Either way, I find it preferable to the more common method of just letting the barn gradually fall in upon itself.

Reclaimed wood is a huge industry, often a flipper/scrapper/reclaimer will offer to tear it down for the wood and make a killing from it.

Ms. merziac was watching Axe Men the other day where they were collecting down trees that had been in the water for years, the $$$$$ this wood brings is insane.

Part of the same "old is new" money grab.

Old growth timber isn't like modern farmed trees. Just like brazed steel frames aren't like modern production frames. Sometimes, they don't make them like they used to, and it's not an improvement.

Very true and doesn't stop the "entrepreneurs" from exploiting one side of the equation or the other to separate a fool and his money.

Yeah but, if it’s an old barn or house, that’s literally falling down from age & neglect, the property owner is sometimes just happy to be rid of any problems. I imagine kids playing around it might be the biggest concern. 🤔

Absolutely, but the owner may not be aware of the windfall they have and the reclaimer makes out like a bandit.

speaking of barns and decay... this poor barn has been crumbling noticeably over the last few years. Probably time for some lumber recycler to make an offer on it?

It is located on Allen road, just a bit north of Cedar Hills Drive, for anyone wanting to make some easy cash.

was out toodling around the area north of Peoria today. Lots of modern wind turbines that are replacing some of the coal fired electric power plants, which seems like a great thing. Still, I saw this old windmill and felt a bit bad for it....
I couldn't help but think there was some sort of C&V metaphor in this too....

Speaking of deer, this young lady was out being sociable this morning. 😎 What’s crazy is, she stayed right in that little area eating, for a good 5 minutes, and noone hit her or tried to spook her or anything. Just another day, I guess. 😁

Shaking down the Miyata 1000 after fitting it with 38mm Paselas in preparation for a 4- or 5-day trip later this month that will be somewhere between a gravel tour and a bikepack--possibly including an ascent of 3,420' East Mountain, via the abandoned Air Force road. The Suntour AG rear works very nicely with the 38 tooth freewheel cog. A shout-out to Lascauxcaveman for the RD and Vintage_Cyclist for the 47-tooth chainring, which perfected my half-step gearing.

This was on a woods road no more than a mile from my house--somehow I had never been there before despite living here for close on to 40 years.

Holla back, buddy. I'm glad you managed to salvage that gunky, crusty old AG. I'm sure I'd have never gotten around to it

"Gunky and Crusty" would be a good name for two cartoon characters who fix old bikes--something like the Magliozzi brothers, "Click and Clack."

It wasn't all that bad, though reviving it did take a bit of effort.

OK, one more time on the deer pics, lol. These guys snuck up on me last night, while I was on the interwebs (probably here). Right after I got these pics, a bicycle spooked them, and the biggest of the three ran down a path that I didn’t know was there, which was about 20 feet from where I was sitting. 🤪😁 He pretty much ignored me, and they all came back after it got dark. They really like this irrigated grass, in the parks along the American River. 😎

Alien egg in the woods.

Actually, back when quarantine began we discovered a little-used park with trails near our house, and this path runs across a slope downhill from a ball field. I'm finding a couple a month, figuring the big rains we get occasionally wash them down out of the woods surrounding the field.
