Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Was supposed to be taking Heidi to LA this week. I decided to still take off today and tomorrow to get in some extra riding and chores and continuing medical education etc., did a quick 50 on the local MUP. It was my first MUP ride since March. I got passed by one cyclist but he was riding an E-Bike so not sure who “won” that one.

It’s really humid out.

Our air is hammered crap. The further up you go, the worse it is. I'm sure glad all I'm doing is weights this week.

I-70 is closed due to fires. That's weird to read, but it's 2020.

Southern California has been having small fires every day, plus a couple of large ones. Fortunately, it hasn't been super windy. A new fire started north of here yesterday and I read that some homes were lost. It's in an area where my LBS guy lives, pretty remote, and his house is alone on a hilltop. I'm hoping it's ok.

Went to REI to pick up more Orange Seal, I've been goin' through it, and the checkout was nuts. There were only two registers open and one of the two cashiers felt the need to walk all the way around the line of registers to wipe down the counter and card reader between customers. The queue was 18 deep when I left and there was a line to get *in* the store because they couldn't get people out of the store fast enough.

I have to go to the MVA to renew my license today. I'm REALLY looking forward to that. Then we have to drive across the river to some benighted housing tract in VA to pick up several 5 gal barrels of hand sanitizer for her practice and hoik them up a flight or two of stairs.

Ugh. This reminds me that my wife's license expired in April and mine will expire in Oct. Maybe with our flexible schedule we'll be able to go at a time when... well, when it's not purgatory.

Here it's renew by mail until the age of 62, I think. Then you have to take an eye test and a written test and good for 5 more years.

I renewed by mail in 2017 at 59 and I'm good till 2022, when I'm 64 - Will you still need me? Will you still feed me?

Maybe it's the first renewal after 60 or 62 when you have to go in. It wasn't too bad when I did it, had an appointment. It would suck now, I'm sure..

I'm going to go take apart the rear hub on my mtb. It's popping under load. I hope the hub is ok, I replaced the rim last year and saved the cheap hub because I'm cheap.

I really want a Centurion Ironman but you're probably dreaming if you even think about putting anything bigger than 25 in a late '80s tri frame.

I mean, I'd ride it too out of necessity, but I wouldn't enjoy it
As it happens, I have an 87 Schwinn Prelude and an 88 Centurion Ironman hanging as framesets. Both looking for new homes. Neither takes anything bigger than 25mm, iirc. Certainly not comfortably.

My next visit to the DMV will be in 3 weeks. Son is 16 years old and time for his behind the wheel test.

This was the quite the controversy in the household with "but why do I have to take the test". In WI due to the virus, one doesn't need to pass a drivers test to get their license if both parents sign off. No way was I allowing a pass on that. The most dangerous thing we allow teenagers to do is drive, and I want an independent assessment. Wife indicated to son that we would sign off - she figured she would convince me, well at times I still can stick up and win on occasion it seems.

I don't even want to think on how the implications when I'm out riding...

I posted last week about the spoke holes on the rear rim of the Fulcrum Racing 5s on my Bianchi. 27 hole rims, so I figured I'd never find a replacement and I'd have to buy a new wheelset. I found NEW, 2020 Fulcrum Racing 5s on PBK for $250, with free shipping!

Then somebody found replacement rims on Ebay! I figured, great! I'll get them and have my LBS rebuild them, and not end up with a broken rear and orphan front wheel!

$120, shipped from Italy for $32, with $10 in tax. $162.

Contacted the one LBS I'm sure would rebuild the wheels right, properly tensioned and all. He said, "Sure! Labor would be $125." It's not just building the wheel, it's unlacing the old one. $125 plus $12 tax.$137.

Total: $300.

So, one partly new wheel for $300, or a whole new wheelset for $250. Hmmmmmmmm.......

Wow. That's putting an awful lot of faith in the judgement of the parents.
