Lightweight road rim brake wheelset?
Sorta oxymoronish for this forum- lightweight wheelset.
Just curious what light(relatively) aftermarket wheelsets people ride that have lasted.
Anyone ride reliable 1700g or even 1600g wheelsets?

I have spinergy wheels that are bit over 1500grams and ride super smooth. No great for sprinting or high end speeds because of the fat spoke design.

This year I switched over to mavic carbone sl alum 55mm aero wheels at 1700grams. Fast and bomb proof wheel design even with a 16spoke front. I have a lot of dirt/sand/rock miles on this set while training for BWR race. They are still true

Have a pair of hed Ardennes plus stallion edition think they are about 1550 grams a set .have almost 5 thousand miles on them and ride between 220 and 230 lbs still as true as day I put them on not the fastest wheelset. By no means but once ur a a good speed they perform pretty good

I've been 260-290 over the last 3 years and I've destroyed a few lightweight wheels in that time. I gave up on it and just ride heavier stuff now. I also gave up on trying to be fast as well, so I just ride what is comfortable and reliable these days.
I found there is also a correlation between power and reliability in wheels. If I'm putting around, light wheels are fine. As soon as I pour some power to them either via sprints or hills, they start to crumple.
So your weight + your power will likely determine what wheels you can use.

I ride at 220-230lbs, and have around 9k perfect miles of riding and crit racing over 4 seasons on a pair of 1392gm American Classic Argents.
I think wheel weight is secondary to smart design, good spec, and proper construction. FSE offers 35mm deep carbon clinchers at 1305gm which they warranty for 2yrs under riders up to 250lbs. I'd like to see wider bladed spokes on that set, but I'm thinking to try them out as they're only about $1.1k, too.

They weigh in at under 1700g, but were reviewed to be really durable and stiff. So I bought them for my Specialized Tarmac and they now are hoisting my Litespeed T1 which is in the build process. I'm only at 180lbs, but from what I remember about the reviews before buying them, the RS81s were built for the long haul.

1392 is really light!...i didnt figure anything down that low.
I can build some 1900g wheels for about $250 thatll be 32 butted spokes, but wasnt sure if there was anything people ride thats up to $150 more and significant lighter. Surprised $400 doesnt get a 1600g wheelset with 28 spokes thats built to handle me, but i guess i went into this with no reason to assume there is.

Ill look more into the American Classics. They are 20% off right now. A lot more than I want to spend and probably more than I am willing to spend.

I can build some 1900g wheels for about $250 thatll be 32 butted spokes, but wasnt sure if there was anything people ride thats up to $150 more and significant lighter. I'm currently riding the Campagnolo Zonda wheelset. They're advertised as less than 1600 grams for the pair but never weighed them. They seem to be lasting and working ok for me. I'm 6'1" and 230 lbs so am not built like a tiny hill climber. You should be able to get them for ~$360 at wiggle.com and they also have a Shimano freehub option. They are cheaper than the Fulcrum Race 3 wheelset that they seem to look like. Cool thing is that they don't have any spoke nipple holes. So no rim tape needed.

Going back to AC, you can get a 18mm internal, 30mm deep, 1547gm Victory30 wheelset for $349.30 right now with the BlackFriday discount.
I use this wheelset on my gravel/winter bike, and while it’s not as crisp or reactive as the Argents (another pair of which I did buy yesterday, btw! $680 was too sweet to pass on!), it’s a perfectly good wheelset which delivers width, low weight and aero benefits. I have no regrets with mine having paid $500, so I think $350 is a steal!

Thanks for the pic for reference- 30mm isnt too excessive looking. Id been considering Archetypes which are only 5mm lower in depth.

I’m anywhere between 225 and 245 and have about 14000 miles on a set of dura ace c24 9000. The front has never even had spoke wrench on it. I broke one spoke on the rear about 5000 miles ago and it’s needed some truing here and there but I’m very impressed with this sub 1500gram wheel set
