I've never understood why the big brands with all their production power never had the option to buy a frame in the colourway you want (from their catalogue) and spec it with the group level.
They do it with cars, so why not bikes?

See dude, you are fast, so this is not a problem you have, but for us pack fodder types, "looking fast" is the only remaining option (mainly because of inconsiderate fast jerks like you!). In any case, being fast is too freaking painful and only lasts, what, a short while? Looking fast, OTOH, is forever.

I also really want to be able to pick stem, handlebar, and crank lengths. Really hard to consider buying a complete bike when I know straight off I have to immediately replace those three things. Saddle choice would be great, too.

I like the green of the S-works, but it's about 20x more than I'd ever be able to justify to my wife (which is why I buy framesets - I like vintage ones because lugs are pretty - and build them up with modern parts a bit at a time).

Picked up my SL7 Pro today. New to forum so can’t post pics yet. After hearing all the great reviews and that the bike actually lives up to all the hype, seemed like a good purchase to me.

Thats what Trek Project One does, sort of. The problem with project one is that unless you like their saddles, your going to toss that. Also, if you want a 130mm stem, your out of luck. You do get to choose wheels and groupset.

I'd love to see a frame+groupset option with bikes. No bars, stems, saddle or wheels. Give me the frame and the benefit of bulk pricing of the groupset, and i will sort the rest out myself.
Of course, that's the area where the brands make good money, especially with their in-house sub-brands, so not likely to happen.

Everything about the bike buying process is messed up. It’s a bunch of people scratching each others’ backs and screwing the consumer in the process.

I get the idea of selling full bikes in a "ready to ride" package - for most people, that is the best option. But once you get into the superbike range, that makes no sense.

Think about how many group sets Specialized buys from Shimano and SRAM each year, and the associated discounted pricing. There will never be a way that building a bike yourself, would ever be financially advantageous compared to buying a complete bike.

Would it really cost $7k to spec a $5k frame versus the $12k complete bike (that will likely have a bunch of parts you'll have to replace anyway, adding to the cost)?

- $2k for groupset
- $2.2k for wheels
- $500 for everything else
- $300 for assembly (although buy the stuff above at the same place, and they will most likely put it together for you for free - atleast in Asia)
- $500 for strippers and blow while your bike is put together
Voila.

So I took a S. Works red for a test ride and it was nice but marginally better than my 08 Cervelo S5 vid with DI2. I think I will save my money for now.

Went by my LBS today to grab some cleats and they were building a 2021 Specialized Tarmac SL7 Pro in white. Though maybe not worth the $7K price tag, that is one pretty bike.

The SL7 was the only one that could make me ''leave'' Giant (I am on my third Giant bike so far), but I simply couldn't justify the extra 3000$ to get it. Even the SL7 Expert - one trim below the Pro - with no CF rims, no DI2 and no Power Meter was 500$ more expensive than my TCR that has all of that.
