Did a standard 60mile-ish route this weekend over varied terrain. The Peloton felt more composed (but not less responsive) and somewhat stiffer than the Circuit especially in the rear triangle/bb. Might be just be the length but the 110mm XA stem seems to flex more than the 100mm 1A on the Circuit.

My favorite thing is that everyone seems to take notice out on the road. I doubt that a lower-midrange carbon ride in the same price range as this build would have gotten any notice.

I still have the white seats for the Pelotwins, but I kinda like these Specialized Test Saddles I scored from Australian Ebay for a song. I did buy them, but I look like a Smooth Criminal who swiped them from a Specialized dealership.


They're pretty much identical, except one's a 24-inch with a triple & Dura Ace wheels, the other's a 25-inch with a double and the wheels I built myself. It's a pretty satisfying feeling to bomb down a descent at 50+, knowing I personally assembled, tightened and trued the wheels my life is riding on.


The red stripe on the 3T threadless stems compliments the Peloton logo nice IMO. Both have matching red, Jandd saddle bags, but silly, vain creature that I am, they are removed for the pic.

Great updates, Chris! You'll need to take a few independent "garage door" shots of each so we can get a nice clear view of your handiwork.

I like the Specialized saddles. Are those leather?

Also didn't know your twins were different sizes. Assuming they're set up the same fit measurements, any preference between the two? I always thought the 22" (54.5cm) Schwinns were too tall for me, but with perfect TT (I have a longer torso than legs), so thought about sizing down and rocking an extra long stem, which isn't ideal.

Thank-you-Jeebus! The test saddles are better quality than the usual Avatar saddles, and also a little more comfortable IMO. Not real leather, I don't think, but they stay cleaner easier than the white Avatars I have for these bikes.

The identical (within a few mm) bb-to-seat-to-bar holy trinity has been replicated to both bikes and I love them both as equally as my own children. The size doesn't matter as much as the triple--it's about 8mm wider down there than the double, which is noticeable, but so far hasn't caused any knee trouble.

Between the twins and my Look, I wish it were possible to ride more than one bike at once.
I think I only saw one other steel bike the whole day during l'Etape du California this year, but I still finished about 150th overall of 1600+ entrants, directly behind Floyd Landis (who was admittedly just out enjoying the day.)

This one is the poor cousin to my 1986 Peloton I posted earlier but is probably a more original and untouthed bike. They were both built on almost the same date in 1986 and this one wasn't free like the Peloton. Both are Columbus tubing bikes. Here is my Prelude. Roger

The peloton will soon be built up as my Dad is moving to CA from WV and it'll be his congratulations bike to keep it in the family. Its going to be built as a classic ride with Shimano 600 tricolor unless he really needs touring gearing. It may end up with a high stem and large saddle but if he decides he wants something else in the future itll come back to me (just needed a reason to get off my butt and build it).

Lovely bike Brazuca! Going to leave her like that or do any upgrades? You can probably get a replacement pair of gum hoods on Ebay pretty cheaply.

Thanks for the compliment calamarichris! I will be keeping it as stock as possible, that's how I like it and your suggestion of a replacement gum hoods is on the list. I have to put back on it the original pump and replace the tires. Will be doing this next few weeks. I was always more of a Trek guy but I'm really enjoying the high end Schwinn and like I said on another post, the 25" Schwinn frame size (63 cm) just fits me very well with a fist full of space on the seat tube. Treks are either 24"(which is OK but shows too much seat post IMO) and 25.5" seems to be a tad too big. I thought those small dimension variations would make no difference, but it does (or maybe I'm too picky). Anyway, I'm selling my Trek 600 24" and starting to look for a 25 Schwinn Voyageur as a light touring bike / commuting as an add on to my Peloton. As a side note, if a '86 Peloton shows up around here, I'll be all over it.

This is my Schwinn Peloton purchased new in the 80's, I am the original owner of this bike.

This road bike is in perfect condition except for the sew up tires, these are the original tires that came on the bike and naturally they're dust.
I got this road bike after folding up another road bike on one of my treks down PCH, I road it for a month then hung it up and now ride cruisers (they don't fold up when you crash).

Thanks for posting and educating us. Prologue appears to have the same geometry as the Peloton. Built with oh so slightly different tube material, they must be first cousins.

I think I need a 22". The 23" is just a bit to large for my 5' 11.5" frame. If anyone spies a 56cm Pel or Pro please give me a shout.

For sale is a 21" (53 cm) 1985 Schwinn Peloton frameset. This is a frame, fork, and upgraded Shimano 600 headset. The frame is structurally in good condition, although there are some paint chips in the fork crown, showing chrome underneath! There are also a couple of small places where paint is missing from the frame, a few chips really. The frame is straight, the derailleur hangar is also straight. This frame was designed for criterium racing and has quick, responsive handling. However, this frame was made of Columbus SL and SP tubing by Panasonic in Japan, with Suntour Pro dropouts. This means comfort on long rides! This is a fantastic vintage frameset and is ready for the miles to be put on! For an additional $30, I will include a silver 130 mm Cinelli XA stem. For an additional $30, I will also include the 27.2 Suntour Superbe Pro seatpost that came stock with this frameset.

Where were you Chicagosteel, when I was groping about blindly and hopelessly on the internet, desperately seeking my first Peloton for 4+ years? Thanks for posting these!

Just a quick update, if you guys haven't already been bored to tears by this in the b&w bike thread. Lauretta's Peloton is finished with phase 1 (touch-up & spreading to 130 by Cyclart down the street) and I'm shopping about for NOS 7803 bits. It's so cute & tiny compared to the lumbering, gargantuan jungle-gyms I ride around on. I'll bet her frame weighs nearly a pound less than mine do.




The Dura Ace aero wheels are just to keep the frame off the floor during phase 2. Probably going to build it up with all Dura Ace 7803-triple jewels, though I've implored Lauretta to choose the jewels herself and make it her own bike.
She's going to assemble the whole thing herself, with me supervising. Unless she let's me build her Velocity A23 wheels--either going to build her a set of those, or go with another pair of those slick 7900-C24's.
I'm about as goony-lookin' as guys come, but she has more than enough to make a cute couple out of us.

I corresponded with the guy on the red Peloton but decided to hold off for now. I like the red ones but a 22 inch would suit me slightly better and I don't need another project right now.

Chris - with the modo and mini Pelotons side by side, you can see clearly the geometry differences, steeper seat tube on the small one, head tube angles about the same. You would be easy to pick out in a crowd, the 6' 8" dude who looks like Greg Norman. ;-)

Yep, DA7700 group with DT shifters, Tektro R200L brake levers, Shimano aero seatpost, 1987-ish perforated Titanium Flite.

Frame came from fellow C&V member Shnibop.

Have a couple sets of wheels to pick from, will post more as the build progresses.
