Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I was changing the CR2032 battery in my power meter three days ago and dropped it. Because garage floors evidently exist in another dimension, I still haven't found it. However, since I bought a 4-pack of new batteries and have now installed one in the PM, I fully expect the lost one to warp back in to our universe shortly.

Yup, that's generally how it works.

As of the morning weigh-in, I'm at 183. This means that I've gotten through Thanksgiving, aka the first major hurdle of winter fatness, without going backwards. Encouraging, but I have a feeling that the road trip over Christmas/New Year's will be a little more challenging.

However, next time the battery dies, the PM will suddenly require a 2025 because there are two 2032s left in the blisters and one taped to the card.

I’m up 9# from my lowest ~Oct. 15th but I don’t feel bad since I’ve been on a cruise, mileage way down with the weather, and am back on hormone therapy which is usually good for at least a 10# gain.

Yup.

On a similar note, I’m trying to get my trainer ready to go and can’t find several items. Indoor is a bigger hassle than putting polar clothing on and going outdoors IMHO.

Getting set up at the start of the season is a pain in the ass, but once you're squared away, I think it's pretty easy. I can't leave my bike/trainer/fan in place, but I can still be ready to ride "ride" in 10 minutes.

Am I ready to LCF?

My brother wants me to sell him my ancient Honda Element and I am much conflicted. One one hand, I am putting < 5K/yr on it, the several hundred/yr we pay for insurance, maintenance, and registration would almost certainly cover alternative transportation, and I have my wife's car for the very rare off-hours work emergency. On the other hand, Ad hoc cabs take forever to show up, Uber can't come within half a mile of my workplace, and it sure is convenient to have a jalopy to go to places in when the wife is out.

You should'a sent me an emergency PM. I would have been happy to help out as I already have family in the Hudson Valley. I was just there a week ago for a birthday party that also had a lot of food.

What happened today was that i was running back and forth from the first floor to the lower floor trying to find all of my cables and such. We have been moving furniture and tvs around and I couldn't find the tv remote or a couple cables. Also, my wife and I leave her Spesh Amira on the Kickr and I just swap an extra seatpost and saddle in for me. So, besides looking for the remote (bedroom nightstand) cables ( family room desk drawer), seatpost (workroom), (saddle (garage cabinet), torque wrench for binder bolt (work bench drawer). carbon paste (toolbox in garage), update old iMac, etc.

Then, Kickr kept dropping out due to interference form my fan so I had to keep moving the fan around and restarting my Kickr . Whew... First world problems...

Today was sunny and forecast around 50, but it never got to 50. Temps were in the mid-high 40s. Rode 66mi, 6k ft, 6h at a very leisurely pace. Was decidedly underdressed though; was fine with my jacket on during climbs and flats but the descents were very cold. Normally I dress for the flats, unzip on the climbs, and pull on the jacket for descents. Still, had a great ride! Lots of traffic everywhere, but surprisingly few asshats, in fact I recorded none. Wanted to sneak one in before the next round of rains confine me to Zwift.

I would not mind a short ride tomorrow when we get home, but forecast is rain/snow mix. Maybe time to move to Spain.

If it has not shown up yet, you can often find small objects by dimming the lights and shining a bright flashlight parallel to the floor.

I asked mrs datlas to try to get direct/nonstop flight next time. She has a hard time turning down a bargain, so only 50-50 that will happen.

Done that already and my OCD cleaning wife even jumped in and swept the garage floor while I moved stuff away from the walls for her. I’m guessing that it is hiding in something else. There are lots of things in a garage that it could have rolled or bounced into. Either that or alt-Denny in another universe has a 2032 that he wonders where it came from. I still think garage and workroom floors harbor wormholes.

Atrial flutter, etc. Metoprolol has helped some. Cardiologist on Monday. Wondering if the valve needs replacing.

In other news, another bear has been spotted in the ‘burbs raiding trash.

I would be so, so happy to be LCF. If I lived in your area, or most metro areas along the NE corridor, I certainly wouldn't own a car. When we were in Brooklyn, I obviously walked, biked and used PT a lot. For the odd instances where a car would be really handy, we were ZipCar members and an hourly rental was always within 6 blocks (in the early ZipCar days, when gas was included and mileage allowance was generous, we'd even use them for road trips down 95 to visit the in-laws in DC). Now, with ride shares and car shares, I would image that the odd ride would be even easier to manage.

Metoprolol is great for flutter but man it will make you performance on the bike suck.

Those are about the size of a nickel, right? If you can’t find that then a wormhole is confirmed, it’s a part of life.
