Any recommendations on finding a used down sleeping bag?

Hello all,

I'm kinda in the position to get a new sleeping bag, or a second one. I'm looking at something rated about 0-10F. One thing I've liked doing was going to REI garage sales and finding bargains needed. But it looks like they don't re-sell bags that have been returned. Seems kinda odd cause they re-sell jackets. Where do these returned sleeping bags go? Is there any hot spots for shopping for a bag? OK there's ebay and amazon. There's CL, of course. Seems like there would be some big reseller somewhere national.

charity shops.. REI stores had returns resale when I lived in a town with one.

sierra trading post sells closeouts and overstocks

maybe its the 'buy a bag and get a free rocky mountain fever infected Tick' that keeps them from selling used sleeping bags.

I do have the ability to clean the bag. I just don't want to be spending $500 for a new one.

Lots of cities have shops that deal in used outdoor equipment. There are online ones too.

Flea markets, craigslist & ebay can work.

The main thing is you have to be a good shopper and not in a rush.

Alright I went ahead and just decided to call REI and see exactly what the policy was, and it ends up I had it wrong. I ended up calling a national 800 number and was told they do re-sell their sleeping bags that have been returned. They try to sell them on their garage sale days. If the item has had some damage to them where they think it's too unsaleable, they donate them.

Sorry for the misinformation. Now any other outlets not mentioned?

I've bought a few nice down bags on Ebay with no problems.

I think I have seen used bags and formerly rental bags at REI scratch and dent sales, perhaps it is a new policy?

Every day I look at REI outlet home page to see what the deal of the day is. And once a week on Friday I check their deals of the week. I have gotten very good prices on some new sleeping bags that way. ... ... ... Now that I have said that, it occurred to me that every sleeping bag I have that is newer than the 1970s was bought at REI outlet.

If you have an REI store nearby, try going in and asking. That's how I ended up with my Mojave +15*F bag. The store closest to me has a little area in the back with discontinued/returned stuff but they often have more in the back.

My recommendation would be to not dry clean.
Hand wash in the bath using an approved "soap".
Most leading bag manufacturers should have a page dedicated to cleaning and offering recommended soaps.
I use "Grangers" down wash but there will be plenty of others out there.
