Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Have to say this....

What's up!

Have to vent on this for once. I read some really good topics on here. But one thing I've noticed, every time someone mentions a Trek bike, there is someone mocking it right away. What's the beef a lot of people have with Trek?

Wheels down brothers.

Maybe some people think Trek may have had some involvement with LA's doping.

Just a thought

For whatever reason this is a Specialized/Cannondale oriented forum. They are both highly regarded, but I swear I think 'dales are worshipped like Biblical idols. Trek and Giant ought to be just as prominently featured, but they get no play here. At least Giant is just ignored. Trek is actively ridiculed as in the many "asplode" references. You can't mention a Trek without someone suggesting it is in imminent peril of disintegrating.

Its simple, The majority of Treks are HIDEOUS. I'm not saying it is a bike that is not of good quality, There are usually just ugly. There are lots of happy trek owners here within the forum, but good luck getting a majority of members here to give it a "Hot" in the Hot r Not thread.

Yeah, because there's no way Trek could have profited from Lance's doping.

Relax, I own a Colnago C59 and there is always someone who feels compelled to criticize the bike or the brand.

I think that Treks are tecnologically well made bikes that give you a lot of bang for the buck. As someone has already mentioned, however, their color schemes tend to run on the garish side. Taste is a subjective thing, however.

Enjoy your bike and the heck what others may think.

Every bike company that has sponsored a pro team in at least the last 30 years has profited from doping.

Also true.

That doesn't change the fact that Trek made huge profits because of Lance's doping, and the fact that some people believe that Trek helped enable his doping.

This.

At the AToC this year, a friend and I were walking around the village waiting for the race to come back and stopped by the Trek booth just because it was one of the only bike manufacturer booths there. We both don't like Treks due solely to their visual appearance. Nissan was raffling off a polkadot Madone and we both entered. We figured that neither of us would buy one, but if we won it, we'd probably ride it. Or maybe sell it and get a bike that isn't hideous.

But really, the only times I've ever seen Treks shot down immediately is when someone puts one in the HrN, or buys one second hand.

I'm so very surprised that trek owners out there seem to be so touchy feely about what anonymous internet people might say about a bike that isn't theirs.

Why do I ride a trek? Is it because there are limited actual bike shops in my town and I picked the one with what I consider the best people? Is it because I like their looks? Is it because they had a 2012 leftover for $600 off MSRP? Is it because I want to get fit and exercise?

Or is it simply to annoy the members of BF with another guy that rides a trek and has no problem with anyone slighting the bike?

All I can say is that I've never taken offense to anyone's thoughts on bikes as they are that persons opinion and I have my own.

I'm also over 40 and have been divorced. If you've made it through divorce and still are alive to ride.. then who gives a fawk about what anyone else thinks about your bike.

Did I mention I ride a trek?

take the internet for what it is. A place where everyone gets a voice unless you use the "ignore" function.

The "hideous" appearance tag is a convenient cop out. It doesn't explain at all the many references to expected frame failure. Grin, grin, cackle, cackle. Unless some folks' notion of ugly correlates with difficulty in making a bike structurally sound.

There is a difference between "can't please everyone" and never seeing a positive comment on the brand here. Face it, it is the Bike Forums equivalent of middle school bullying. The parallels between adolescent school clique behavior and bicycling poserism are amazing. What could look more like a vigilante mob than a peloton sweeping down the street. Just look at the posts about some interloper trying to join an established paceline. Classic parallels to adolescent cliques. Folks pile onto Treks because of mob mentality. Cannondale and Specialized in are the "cool" crowd. Trek's are the nerds. Nobody really cares about how good or bad they look. It is just sport to make derogatory comments about them. If his Trek is bad, then my Cannondale makes me superior. Then when the bully is challenged, the retort is something about how too sensitive the Trekkies are. It's dishonest BS but an interesting sociological phenomenon for sure. This is all more serious than it seems in light of the recent teen suicide reported in the news over the last couple of days. You may think I exaggerate, but the behavioral patterns are strikingly similar.

I guess you couldn't resist, huh? My point exactly. I do wonder though, how after just 11 posts and less than a month membership you are already conversant regarding "asplode" and "400W. Quick study, I suppose. Or some other explanation?

How about how they did Greg Lemond. Or even how the the representative from their district happened to be one who yelled the loudest about the US wasting gov't money going after Lance. Can't tell me thats a coincidence.

In large measure, Trek's a victim of their own success. You see Trek bikes everywhere. Thus, they lose some cache to a group of enthusiasts.

To paraphrase Caloso, paraphrasing Yogi Berra, No one buys Treks, they're too popular.
