Disappointed in the new Verve+ 2 from Trek

Trek just released the new Verve+ 2, but just like their Marlin+, you can't take the battery out anymore and you have to charge by connecting the whole bike to the charger ... Not great if you live in an apartment

Current Trek website listings have Verves 1-4, and only the model 1 has the battery hidden inside the downtube. Model 2 has a giant wart of a battery attached to the top of the downtube and 3&4 have it mounted inside, removeable from the side.

If Verve 2 is changing to mimic Verve 1, either buy one now or set your sights on a model 3 or 4. Or one of a hundred other ebikes with removeable batteries.

We had the verve+2 in the rental fleet, so it was just easy to pop the battery off and charge it, if we want to keep the model we would have extension cords all over the floor.
Trek bike are very regional too, i wish we would have the verve+ options that Europe has

It's a cost-saving move for the entry-level model. Bike shop brands like Trek are getting a lot of pressure to make more affordable models of eBikes. To do that and still provide the quality and level of dealer support needed, they have to cut some features.

By building the battery in, they save the cost of:
  • A separate battery housing
  • Battery latch
  • Weatherproofing or draining of the battery and its interface with the bike frame
  • Safety certification of the battery as a separate component (they would instead certify the electrical system of the whole eBike)
They can do this while still providing Trek quality. The downside is that it's not for commercial fleets like yours; just for someone who has a garage and who is willing to charge the bike in the garage or bring it inside.

I own an Electra (who are owned by Trek) with a built-in battery for my wife. It's good quality all-around and "only" cost $1800. It looks nicer too, with the integrated battery. But yeah, I have to have an extension cord or wheel it over by the power outlet to charge.
