Hi Frank - you won't get too many replies in here. This is a specific post about bikes for sale people people think might be worth buying.

You'll want to head over to Classic & Vintage instead (the general classic/vintage forum) and click on "post new thread" right at the top. Be sure to include any photos if you have them as well as any information about what's written on the other parts on the bike.

Pinarello Treviso
[h=2]Pinarello Treviso - $849 (Teele Sq Somerville)[/h]

© craigslist - Map data © OpenStreetMap

(google map) (yahoo map)

condition: excellent
size / dimensions: 58cm

Get out and ride a sexy new bike this summer!

58cm Mid-80s Pinarello Treviso with pantographed Campagnolo Victory components. Some newer stuff mixed in to improve rideability and sexiness. Frame is clean, no dents or dings, and is fully nickel-plated beneath the (typically poor) paint and decals. I've touched up a few chips, but there's no rust.

Full Measurements:
Top Tube, CtC = 22 5/8 inches, 57.5 cm
Seat Tube, CtT = 23 1/2 inches, 59.5 cm
Down Tube, CtC = 24 1/2 inches, 62 cm
Chain Stays, CtC = 16 inches, 40.5 cm

Since the photos were taken, I've moved to a 46cm heat-treated Nitto noodle handlebar that's been rewrapped since the photos were taken, but that wrap is losing steam and should be replaced soon. There are also new brake pads on it, but I'll provide the original Campys with the bike if you want to ride old-school. I've also installed two Velo Orange Moderniste bottle cages (VO Moderniste MK2 Stainless Steel Bottle Cage - Water Bottles & Cages - Accessories).

Bike will come without pedals.

Pictures tell 1000 words. It looks blue in some light and green/teal in others. It's a great ride, but I've got others and this one never gets used any more.

$849 or make me a reasonable offer.

Bianchi Volpe Road/XC Bicycle c. 1990 - Tuned up and rewrapped
[h=2]Bianchi Volpe Road/XC Bicycle c. 1990 - Tuned up and rewrapped - $300 (Wakefield, MA)[/h]

make / manufacturer: Bianchi
model name / number: Volpe

Moving to NH this summer and I don't have any use for a road bike. I put a fair amount of work into this bike, including a general tuneup, new wires, new chain, re-wrapped handlebars and new tubes. It's a throwback that rides great. I haven't taken it out this season, but I would regularly go on 20 mile rides with it last summer/fall. Properly cared for and stored this winter. Contact me if you want it!

Will accept trades for cool stuff.

I think these bikes are hard to value, and worth is a funny thing. Is this likely as nice as other bikes that sell for this? Yes...Redcay is among the best. At the same time he's been sitting on it at that price for a long while and there are a limited number of people who know who he is and who want to buy one. I would not pay that, but I have a lot of bikes and can be quite patient.

I've seen worse bikes sell for more...I'll say that.

It looks nice but there are some issues that are probably holding it back. The crank is a mis-match, the seller has little feedback, tires are flat, no brake hoods, bike needs a good cleaning and polish, local pick-up only and the seller doubles up on photos when he could have posted more details. If your local, I think I would try to meet face to face and put 12 - $100 bills in his face and see what he says.

Patience is always key.

I've seen similar bikes sell for less.

For what it's worth, the Redcay is pretty damn awesome. Great detail, fits 32c, subtle. It has a low BB...like the Kellogg/Merlin. I wonder if they learned that from Bill Boston.

If he's smart he'd take it all day long...no ebay hassle and he's only missing maybe $250 from asking price after fees.

It seems high, but like the seller says, Jim Redcay didn't build too many frames before closing up shop and going to Ross. I love my Redcay. I bought a bare frame (around $300, as I recall) and built it up with parts I already had. If the Avocet crank bothers you, I imagine you could find someone to swap you for a Campy SR. It also looks to have a first gen SR rear derailleur, which is likely correct for the bike. Ask the seller for the patent date. I doubt it will be later than 1978. In general, the earlier, the better, at least in terms of eBay sale possibility, should that be your route to a more reasonable price. It's also got a four-hole NR front derailleur (beginning of the post-CPSC era). I think that was one-year-only, also 1978. My biggest worry would be that huge scrape on the back of the right fork leg, and what it might imply about the integrity of the frame. How the f*ck does something like that happen? You have to assume the tubulars will need replacing, otherwise wouldn't the seller have at least inflated them? Even a little? Unless the pump is completely non-functional.

You can figure out the year from the serial number (ask the seller - it's under the bottom bracket). It will start with a backward "K", followed by (I think) five, maybe six digits. I have the decoder around somewhere.

Anytime the CL ad says, "very rare" + the picture backdrop is a cluttered garage, yard, or porch = clueless seller

Not familiar with the marque, but the price is right if you're looking for a vintage randonneur project.
