As a Navy veteran (with 3 siblings as Navy vets, too) - my only comment is War is the result of failed negotiations.
America's war budget exceeds that of most of the other Nations combined.
Honor the dead, but vilify those who sow the seeds and manipulate the facts to justify the USA war agenda.
Pacifism is a better path, money on War is money wasted.
Which Country will be first to begin the 'stand-down' process?
Send every federal legislator's grown children to a war zone = rapidly diminish America's taste for War.
Reinstate universal service. No more bonespurs or exemptions for wealth.
The take away from Memorial Day should be a vision to end the cycles of War.

Yes: it seems like the discussion is how ****ty it is we can't have hotdogs and go to the beach because of the pandemic- which is not the point of the day at all. Think about all of those who can't ever go to a beach again and be thankful.

I've always been a fairly reflective person on such days. (Not just those days, but particularly those.) And so, for me at least, heading to an ancient nearby cemetery with lots of history, or heading to a secluded spot where I can (if I want) have my dogs and barbecue and whatever fru-fru makes the moment ... so long as it doesn't detract from the opportunity to reflect on what it means to be free.
Fortunately, I've never been one to head to "the" beach with 1000 others. I've always preferred to find the road less traveled and to see where it takes me. Perfect, for such days demanding respect and appreciation for who we are and where we come from.

Edited to add: Deaths don't just happen in wartime. In 1988 I left 1/5 for another assignment. In 1989 a helo carrying members of C 1/5 crashed in South Korea during Team Spirit and 18 Marines and 1 Navy Corpsman lost their lives and 15 Marines were injured. I always wonder if I could have been on that helo if hadn't left 1/5. I knew two of those killed, Lt. Wooten and PFC Decker and two of the injured, LCpls Gomez and Pesuti.

There is plenty of profit being made on the backs of our military personel, some of that needs to trickle down to the health and welfare of our veterans.

Love all the fantastic war films TCM always shows during these holidays. Saw one from post WWI Weimar last night I had never seen before, Westfront 1918. Wow. That is filmmaking. Really powerful stuff. Kubrick had quite the blueprint for his action in Paths of Glory.

The two gifts of my early years - my granddad telling me of his experience in WWI as a corporal (he didn't say but my dad told me he was one of two out of a company of 26 replacement corporals to come home, both wounded). And my high school english teacher who spent 5 days pinned in a one man foxhole on the beach at Okinawa. He had us read Norman Mailer's first book, the fiction of a pointless patrol on a Japanese held island in WWII. I knew that both of these men saw the horrors of war firsthand. They solidified my decision to not go and be willing to serve time if it came to that. (That decision was not based on the war horrors. It came from my study of our Revolution in grade school. I am not at all sure I could participate in an attack on another country and pull the trigger on a man fighting as my ancestors may have to defend their homeland. And if I cannot pull that trigger, I have no business being at the front with comrades. That is not a qualifying reason for Conscientious Objector status, so had I pulled a low number, room and board at the Fed might well have been.
I see the fields of crosses in France and think of my grandpa's two dozen company mates.

Mike was a squared away trooper. I heard a lot of stories of what happened that night. The outcome of very single story is Mike was an absolute badass who gave his life to protect his troops.

yup my 93 soon to be 94 yr old Dad was knocked over by a house grenade cap that flew over his buddy. he said it hit him hard enough to knock him down. my uncle was a corpsman that told stories of driving the truck that collected the dead from battlefields. they were lucky but pitched in where they could
