Another Tenax Schwinn back in my garage. Found a 1987 Super Sport in my size and in the amazing magenta/white paint job. It is an early build(357th day of 1986), and oddly it has the non-aero Shimano 600 brake levers. I think they are stock because they are the original magenta brake cable housings at the correct length for a non-aero setup. This color is gorgeous! The magenta and white are non-metallic.

This 25” Sprint frame is from 1985 or 1986, as far as I can tell from catalog scans. I got it about four years ago for my son, but it turned out to be too tall for him, even though he is taller than me.

Anyway, I put most of the Sprint’s parts on a 23” LeTour frame that he still rides.

Meanwhile, the Sprint has inherited some of my nice road bike parts from the late 70s along with some new parts. I posted pics a couple of weeks ago in the inquisition thread, but last weekend I found that the adjustable stem had a stripped bolt hole and so I replaced it with a Technomics stem and while I was at it I switched back to down tube shifters.

So it’s looking a bit more C&V than it did a few weeks ago. And sporting generally much better components than the Sprint had originally.

1989 Schwinn Circuit, with full Shimano Sante groupset. It was so complete, the only missing part was ONE black rubber nub for the front brake pivot bolt! It was really dirty when I got it, but it cleaned up nice! Threw on a longer seatpost - though that's the original Rolls saddle! - and stem, and a more modern bar. Cinelli Giro d'Italias may LOOK classic, but Soma Highway Ones are much more comfy!

Allow me to introduce my latest project, #9 as I call it, a 1987 Prologue. Having been inspired by ROS’ Prologue build thread, I scoured the web to find a similar black/grey Prologue. Picked up a 56 cm frame for my Xmas gift to myself and either used existing 1055c components that I had or bought the missing components. The only odd part are the brakes, tri-600s, because I thought the gray paint on them matched the frame very well. I stole the DT Swiss wheelset off my C’dale 500 & installed a 13-21 Ultegra 7 speed block. It has the indexed DT shifters which are more period correct. It’s been a joy to ride & appears to be a fairly fast ride, having posted a few faster times on some local segments. All in all, a good addition to the fleet.

^Prologues are so hot! I've had this era of Schwinn on my radar for a while, and feel like I scored big time with the Premis I posted. There is some serious bike porn in this thread, and the Prologues always jump out at me.

Congrats on the Prologue score!! Beautiful bike. Dig the wheelset choice, too. It totally gives you the excuse to fully modernize everything, you know, to match the wheels (it's important, hahaha) at some point in the future. Or just enjoy as is.

Hmmm, dunno how this thread escaped my attention until now. Excuse the cr@ptastic photo; it's from the CL ad from when I bought it just before things locked down. Haven't had a chance to get a real pic since then.


1989 Circuit, pretty good shape (a few nicks in the frame). Seller threw in the stand, and a spare wheelset built with absolutely yummy Phil hubs. $100 for the whole kaboodle. Alas, the original Sante rear mech was replaced with a Sora or some such. I've since swapped in a '90-ish Dura Ace ($10 at the Swap), along with a Dura Ace seat post ($5 at the thrift). Also removed that stem extension. Fits just right and fast enough for me.

The spare rear wheel is a 6-speed freewheel hub, so that wheelset became the wheelset for the '86 Ironman I bought in '19. So with tires from general stock, I have just a shade north of $200 in for both bikes.

some really great bikes in this thread and I have some of the same. In 1986 my single mom bought me my first road bike, a Schwinn World - I spent hours scouring the catalogues, looking at what the real riders had, etc. I put hundreds if not thousands of miles on the World and I loved it. I got back in the saddle 3 years ago and its been a hobby/obsession to collect the whole Schwinn Line up - it wasn't the original plan, just kind of happened. I can't pass up a $50 nice paint lower level Schwinn or recently the $200-$250 top of the line nice paint Schwinn.

At present, I have 16 Schwinn Road Bikes from a '78 LeTour III to a '89 Voyageur. I love them all but this weekend I procured what might be my favorite yet. '85 Schwinn Peloton. it came mostly original except the seat which has a modern Specialized as a space holder till I figure out what the vision for the bike really is. Spent 20 minutes changing out the seat, mounting some clincher tires I had on hand on some NOS Velocity Clincher rims. the original 32 hole rims and tubulars came with the bike are nice but I'm a bigger guy and not ready to ride the lightest offering wheel sets from 1985...

Short test ride and she is fast and at 22.30 LBS, my lightest mostly stock Schwinn yet.( 36 spoke wheels and 25C rubber with tubes added 1/2 lb)

1985 Schwinn Peloton, Suntour Superbe Pro Group. 53/42 Crank, originally 13-22 rear changed out to 14-28. I have many more Schwinns to display and will show them here as I get them finished.

another Schwinn, either an '88 or '89 Voyageur. Remarkably good condition. No Stamp on Head Badge but Number on Bottom Bracket is J806783. I believe the J 8 may make it Oct 1988 which most likely is an '89 I read elsewhere this may mean it was built in Greenville MS. Can anyone confirm? Original as shown except the new tires and bar tape. Still some more cleaning and lubing and tuning to be done, but very happy to own this one

Wow, it's been like the Schwinn-of-the-week club for you lately! Excellent find. To this day I regret the time I didn't jump on a flat bar converted Voyageur on CL about 3 yrs ago.

Sometimes I have to use a magnifier or loupe to find the headbadge number, when they're real faint. It should be there, seems to me.

ok thanks for the tip, I'll take a closer look. and the final "new to me" Schwinn is this very original '85 LeTour Luxe. The Luxe is very similar to the Voyageur in '85, same Tenax frame, many shared components. This one is as it came with new bar tape and a brook b17 saddle in honey. Also put on some 27x 1 3/8 Kenda knobby tires.

Both the Voyageur and this Luxe have a 5 spd Mallard rear cassette which is sticking o ordered a 20 Spline Freewheeel Tool which will delay the completion and first rides for these two beauties. Plan is to remove the mallard and put in a Shimano 14-28 6 spd cassette in its place. I now have 11 80's Schwinn's in my collection with 4 for sale which may hit the for sale page on Bike Forums.

Its obsessive, I know - but buy them right, fix them up, enjoy them and only sell when you have 1 too many that is starting to get in the way. I still need a Paramount, Prologue and Circuit and my collection will be "complete"

A 6-speed freewheel won't just swap in. Being 5-speeds, both those bikes probably have 120mm rear axle spacing. You may have to cold set them to 126mm and use a longer axle, and possibly change the wheel dish.

gotcha. I don’t have an issue cold setting. The bigger mystery is a 5spd on a emerald green voyager. Def not stock. It’s almost like the luxe and Voyageur were specced the same. With 120 spacing. But the voyager was def 126 when new so scratching my head…

25s fit, but it's a chore getting them past the brake pads, with the brakes set for the original Wolber rims.
